Friend was on Balad at one point. There were some Saddam era bunkers off to one side and he used to go over there just to get away. One night, he sees a bunch of MP vehicles and humvees headed that way. He thinks nothing of it, he has done nothing wrong. They pull up, start searching the bunkers. Men and women start piling out in various states of dress/undress. Turns out a reserve unit from Illinois, Chicago edition, was working on the base and had been running an organized prostitution ring in the bunkers. The highest person caught was a full bird. We need to just accept that prostitution is going to happen and send whores.

@monsterhunter45 Best thing about this is it’s not a 3-books-on-Amazon author (me!) crashing out, it’s a genuine bestselling author diagnosing a problem that keeps me from recommending books. I love fantasy, but I can only scroll past so many “housewife” books before giving up and hitting oldies

My new book is 220 on all of Amazon. 31 in fantasy, which it turns out is now utterly dominated by romance. I just went through the top 100 and it’s probably 80% housewife sexy time. Out of the top 100 I saw my new one, Jim Butcher’s new one, Matt Dinniman’s DCC (which is a mega hit right now) and a handful of other things that are regular fantasy. All the usual stuff you’d identify as fantasy have been pushed out of the rankings by romantasy. There wasn’t even any big name continual sellers like Sanderson or GRRM. There wasn’t even any Tolkien I don’t think. Just books with generic covers written by a lady I’ve never heard of with a title like A (something) of (something) and (something). On the generic covers (lots or flowers and birds) I noticed only a handful showed an actual character. And I listed most of those up top. I’m not even bagging on the mommy pr0n with dragons. They make bank. More power to you, ladies. But Amazon really should tweak its subgenres so if a customer is looking for something that’s traditional fantasy the lists aren’t dominated by stuff that isn’t that. Hell, Sword & Sorcery is dominated by romance even. Dudes who are shopping for something new in the style of Conan should get pointed at Howard Andrew Jones’ Chronicles of Hanuvar (seriously, it’s bad ass), not Lobelia Troutswallow’s A Kingdom of Angst and Boning. Not that there is anything wrong with angsty boning, if that’s what you like to read ladies. But when X does its semiannual Why Don’t Men Read freak out, men do read, it’s just that the industry crowds us out because there is a lot more money in mommy pr0n so in comparison it seems like we don’t. That would be like counting Pr0nhub views as TV and then having a bunch of pundits freak out about how women don’t watch TV anymore.

@charlesarthur It's pitch perfect. It's not fully ripping into it, and it's not a cut and paste carbon copy either. It's a very smart film.

The undisputed Star Trek parody is Galaxy Quest (1999). Not mean-spirited or lazy, but a genuine love letter to both the show AND the fans who adore it. Everyone nails the brief, and Sigourney as an intelligent woman trapped in a sexist TV machine is inspired casting.

Here’s the truth about bullying in schools. Yes, it happens, and no, it shouldn’t. But schools often get blamed unfairly for “ignoring it.” But understand it’s not as easy to deal with as you might think. Unless you have threats in writing or on video, it can be complicated

Service hours help exemplify the Gifts of the Holy Spirit. These are not earned, but are used…in service.

@EvilColin @AMDG_Derek Should we therefore “lovingly demand” service hours for Baptism, Eucharist, Confession, Anointing the Sick, Marriage? Confirmation gives and increases the graces needed to do good, it isn’t earned by doing good.

I dislike that Catholic schools have a “service hour requirement” to receive the sacrament of Confirmation. I’m open to opposing arguments, but I’ve always thought that it risks leaving the kids with the impression that “I worked for this, therefore I’m owed and deserve this.”

Did anybody else's priest today make the connection between the road to Emmaus and a Mass? First half is recounting scripture/the Gospel. And the second half is breaking of the bread aka the Eucharist
