@EvilCirno @Sorb3tStan Hahahaha. That is one of the silliest copes I have ever heard. It is an objectively overpriced underpowered device. It is okay if you just want it for the vibes but it is not fairly priced. Gtfo

Valve has quietly reached an important milestone for its upcoming Steam Machine. The device was recently added to the official Vulkan 1.4 conformant products list from the Khronos Group, which means the hardware and graphics stack successfully passed official compatibility testing. According to the listing, the system uses an AMD Navi 33 GPU with the open-source RADV graphics driver, alongside a custom AMD processor. It also runs Valve’s custom Linux-based “Neptune” operating system built on Linux 6.16. This kind of certification usually happens relatively late when is about to launch

The real constraint isn't the old hardware, it's the old hardware being power constrained due to various reasons. Maybe if they opted for liquid metel instead of traditional thermal paste they could get more performance out of their cooling solution which would allow the CPU draw more power which would lead to better performance.

@LordSmap @ultradereks What is very uncommon and unprecedented is the AI insanity driving the price of aging tech UP. Nobody would complain about the tech being a few years behind if the price went down year over year as it used to be the case. The entire consumer PC market is in a dire situation.

Steam Machine was announced. The specs looked meh. 6 cores, rx7600 8gb gddr6. Techtube gets super hyped. People in the comments are all hyped. I point out specs in comments. Replies be like “nah bro, they will optimize the games for the steam deck.” Ram and ssds skyrocket in price. People are worried about the cost. Steam deck gets released. Performs as speced. People lose their freakin minds. “I can’t believe it performs like how it’s speced!!” “It’s such a rip off. I can build the exact same computer for around 50 dollars less!” Am I taking crazy pills?

@grok @EzhmaarSul @TenseMountainTX @sophieraiin you are mistaken and the sources you referenced are mistaken. He was at an intersection just outside the capital grounds. It's due to him not being on the capital grounds that he wasn't charged for trespassing

Nick Fuentes **was** on the Capitol grounds on Jan 6. The House Select Committee stated he and Patrick Casey "were present on the Capitol grounds." Video shows him with a bullhorn near the Peace Monument (right by the Capitol) urging the crowd to advance, break barriers, and disregard police. He didn't enter the building and faced no charges. Claims he was only at some unrelated street corner don't match the record.

It's actually very common for the technology in these types of machines to be outdated at launch primarily due to the long development cycle. When the PS5 launched it launched with hardware that was almost 2 years old at the time. The switch 2 launched with hardware that was 4 years old. It's really only PC's with off the shelf parts that can be bought with the newest consumer technology. Even newly released laptops trail behind desktop PC's by about a year. The steam mechine is essentially laptop hardware in a console form facter running desktop software.

@ultradereks The problem is that Valve took too long to deliver hardware they spec'ed in 2023 which is basically equivalent to a 4 year old laptop now, add to that the memory and storage price hikes making the thing cost over 1k without even including a controller. Bad timing and bad price.

Can someone much smarter than me please explain why you'd purchase a Steam Machine instead of a PC or Console?

@LordSmap @plumbwane @troy0h1 @ChasersFrame You know that's the most surface level description ever right? They don't write the full specs for normies like you. Check all the 6 core 30w laptop zen 4 cpus amd has released the past few years and you'll find the exact model the steam machine uses. Its just 2 full cores.

@plumbwane @troy0h1 @ChasersFrame It is. It's a hawk point cpu. 2 cores 4 threads. Taken straight out of a laptop, rebranded and sold to valve.

Why should they subsidize it when it's not a locked platform? What if you buy it and install a different os on it and buy games through a different storefront. Consoles are subsidized because their's a garentee that the price will get made up through the cut that's taken from game sales.

@VideoCardz The 1k price is pure insanity for the amount of compute the machine gives. They should have subsidized it. ~$700 with controller would be fair price. 1k with no controller and 16gb RAM / 512gb SSD is just way too much. I know we live in the horrible RAM/SSD timeline but still.

@clanka9000 @ShitpostRock exactly, the pricing is full blown retarded. they should be priced waaay lower to be competitive. i built a mini pc with external gpu for cheaper and it out performs a ps5 pro, if its priced above ps5 pro, it HAS to be better, not worse. thats just dumb.

The basic 512 GB version for the Steam Machine without a controller is $1049. Higher capacity and accessories add a significant amount to the cost. First, the CPU and GPU The CPU is a Semi-custom AMD Zen 4. 6 cores / 12 threads, up to 4.8 GHz. The GPU is AMD RDNA 3, 28 Compute Units with up to 2.45 GHz sustained, 8 GB GDDR6 VRAM... Only 16GB RAM Total TDP is less than 150 watts for the CPU and GPU combined. Early reviews of the machine using performance FSR mode with the latest AAA titles like Forza Horizon 6 are only getting 30 FPS, or Cyberpunk 2077 with medium graphics getting 50 FPS... short of the 4k 60 fps claim, even with FSR put in performance mode. IMO the price is too high for the performance, but I get it... especially with the AI demand for RAM. The price of the basic version WITH the controller should have been somewhere around $900, with premium versions at over $1000. For the rest of us... just building a custom PC using available ITX cases and components will still lead to a much better price - performance ratio. Even many prebuilt with similar stats would beat the price, and it would be upgradable when RAM prices drop or newer GPUs come out. Still... I think it will sell a significant number of units because of the name-brand recognition and small form factor for people who don't have a lot of space in their house. Sometimes, the no-hassle factor is worth the price premium rather than going for some less reputable prebuilts or making your own.
