Trains in America cost 4-5x more and take 10-20x longer to build than in France and Japan.
Those countries have stronger unions, higher wages, more environmental protections, and more red tape.
The real difference? Eminent domain and a government that actually functions.

@DeepNotShallow I'm not sure your assertion aligns with reality, trying to see where rail is being laid by country by year and at what cost looks like a pretty significant research project.
That being said, the US has a lot of abandoned and underused ROW that could just be rehabbed.

@pollypocketmode Think it would just be shorter shifts on the days you do work or just dropping the overtime threshold, at least based on what I’ve seen. Also making overtime step laddered ie over 32 is time and a half and over 40 is double or something similar.

easiest way to explain this is that american drinks are kind of non-linear because every order you pay a little serf tax to their service class, and after about three drinks the bartender recognises you as a more reliable ally than the bar owner and mixes drinks at 2-3x strength
