@KyleLeeWriter @scotthraines This is an odd take. Artists are asking you to follow them and their tastes. Your inability to do that only reflects your inflexibility. You’re blocking yourself. Just because you can “smell” the artist on a work should not degrade it. Just say you don’t like it.

I find McCarthy's writing to be unreadable. The characters all speak the same way, which is exactly like the prose, and the disregard of punctuation not only makes things annoying to read, but to me functions as a way of McCarthy constantly reminding me that he's written the book. The same way that Quentin Tarantino often gets in his own way as a filmmaker by needing to remind you that you're watching a movie he's directed. I get it, you're proud of your work, but it can't connect to me because you keep getting in the way. You won't just let the characters and story speak for themselves, you have to interject "I'M A WRITER, YOU'RE READING MY WRITING" into every sequence.

Cormac McCarthy is a good metric for how well you can read—it’s not the faux literary fluff that gets praised today, but it’s also not readily apparent to the reader. So much is said in what is unsaid, so you have to really read. For example:

I read the first hundred pages of The Road last year, and read the first hundred pages of Blood Meridian this year, and in both instances, gave up, because the books never clicked. Lyrical writing, but the characters are reduced to way down Maslow's hierarchy, and the tone is so relentlessly bleak, with almost no humanity breaking through, it was difficult to feel anything besides the flint clicking against the cold steel in the overwhelming darkness. I know many of you love it, but to me, it's overwrought, overstylized, and overhyped.
