@jackcalifano When I still lived within the city limits of Boston I would go weeks at a time without driving. And my office during that period was just outside of the city limits.

Sorry but NYC is the only real city in America. It is the only place where you can comfortably not own a car. Many other places used to be cities, but they were all turned into large suburbs with some skyscrapers and a sports stadium owned by a bank. Sad but true.
Jack Califano@jackcalifano

I think NYC really suffers from being the only Real City in a country of 300 million people. Manhattan has become a sort of City Disney Land for kids from Florida and Ohio. There is no other place to fulfill the fantasy.

@stephen_stumpf Aube is from Vermont and was living/racing out of there when he won the Busch race. I think he moved to New Hampshire briefly later on his Busch North career.

@jay7397 I’ve used the hometowns listed on Racing Reference for consistency’s sake, and Jamie Aube’s (who won a Busch race in 1987) is listed as Box, NH. Might be a case of a driver having multiple places to choose from (for example, would Jeff Gordon be from CA or IN?)

DMB is a phenomenon of the Southern university fraternity scene in the early 90's that went worldwide because they released what turned out to be their only *really* good studio album within weeks of Jerry Garcia dying & they picked up a lot of the spill. So they have the jam band vibe on them, but in truth theyre like "Albermarle County Virginia in 1993" frozen in amber forever.

@davepl1968 I watched it live in my middle school library. Only the kids from a few classrooms were brought there to watch. I thought that was odd since a teacher from my school had advanced pretty far in the Teacher in Space Program and he had gone to Cape Canaveral to watch it himself.

99.9% of people who "experienced" the Challenger disaster saw it on replay and now remember it as live. Almost NO ONE was watching. Everyone thinks they were. It's a fascinating collective false memory.
Jeremy London@SirJeremyLondon

Anyone who experienced the Space Shuttle Challenger explosion, like I did, is probably a bit hesitant to get too excited about the Artemis II launch today. I truly hope our children don’t have to experience such tragedy. May the Universe welcome them and return them safely home 🙏

30 years ago today, April 1, 1996, what many assumed was an April Fool’s gag turned out to be real: Howard Stern took over morning drive on WBCN 104.1, replacing Boston icon Charles Laquidara. To make room, Laquidara shifted to mornings on sister station WZLX 100.7, where he stayed until his retirement in 2000. Many in the industry believe that day was the beginning of WBCN’s gradual demise. The station went off the air 13 years later.

@1oldtrucker @SpotterBrett That’s easy, the laps are scored but don’t count towards the race total. There are short track races/series that are “green flag laps only” for the race total but you can gain or lose spots on pit road.

That would also fix the problem. Fans (especially in attendance spending hundreds if not thousands) deserve as many green flag laps as possible. Read the last sentence again.
Thomas Billing@TheThomahawk

@SpotterBrett Further to this, laps run under caution for the stage breaks should not count.

People don’t remember being under 4 years old but they think they do. This is the most annoying part of talking to people that don’t have kids. They think they remember their childhoods but they don’t. That’s why they think everything was chill.
Madeline Grant@Madz_Grant

I've noticed amongst friends who have little kids that they are basically forced into waking up when they do. When I was little I remember v clearly knowing that we shouldn't go and wake parents until at least 9am on a weekend, and generally entertaining ourselves in the morning

making a 70,000 seat stadium 30 miles from a city sort of makes sense when it's in use 8-10 times a year, but it's really not great when you want the stadium to be a year-round destination.

@noble_elite4 @FWRobbins45 There was a rumor that NASCAR made a rule change requiring thick er front end tubing to prevent teams from using more expensive alloys before the fatalities happened. This made the cars too rigid and caused the deaths, so NASCAR quietly changed to rule back.

So, I've had two people today tell me that the Gen 4 was a death machine and was eventually replaced due to Dale Earnhardt's death. Look, I know the media likes to lie and rewrite history, so I can see where the confusion comes from, but that was never the case with this car. Let me fill you kids in. We lost Adam Petty, Tony Roper, Kenny Irwin and Dale within what, a yearish of each other? You know what the sanctioning body did in the wake of these incidents? They mounted a kill switch (prior to Dale's accident) on the steering wheel, that's it. A ban on open face helmets was discussed, but it wasn't made compulsory until 2002. @NASCAR didn't make any significant strides in safety until the death of Blaise Alexander in October 2001 in an Arca race at Charlotte. I believe that was on a Friday night and NASCAR mandated head and neck restraints that weekend. Guess what, there hasn't been a fatal accident in their top three series since. The only accident that came close during the duration of the Gen 4lifespan was Jerry Nadeau in 2003 at Richmond which was largely due to the roll cage collapsing, and a lot of that blame needs to be placed on the team. The Busch series ran essentially the same cars until 2010, no fatal accidents after 2001 as well. Jeff Fuller survived one of the worst accidents I've ever seen in 2006 at Kentucky. Now, we've had serious injuries in the Next Gen (7), and the Gen 6. To paint the Gen 4 with broad strokes and claim it was inherently a death trap is just nonsensical. So, can we move past this already folks?

@MattWeaverRA One thing people forget when saying the hall of fame should be Cup only is there was a long period where it made zero financial sense for drivers like Jack Ingram, Richie Evans, LD Ottinger, Jerry Cook etc to pursue a full time Cup ride.

NASCAR and its adjacent communities are great for reasons beyond the Cup Series. Mike Stefanik, Philip Morris and Randy Lajoie contributed to the greatness of this culture in ways the Cup Series can't quantify. Sunday fans exist due to their Saturday contributions. That's fame.
Matt Weaver@MattWeaverRA

@TravisRockhold 'Fame' does not imply statistical greatness. It implies legacy contributions! So yes, it's the Hall of Fame, not the Hall of Very Good.
