@ArmandDoma @dbinthed This was always what he was according to information that was already public and knowable. I had the slight expectation that he could be better than he seemed, but he is not.

@deltaIV9250 I am not DSA, but the Marxist I knew said it's because there's still a Communist party in Russia that comprises a significant portion of the Russian Duma (the lower house of their Assembly). In other words, Communism is a bit more popular and accepted. Weak reason, I know.

Leftists’ thoughts on Ukraine are so interesting like I have a lot of leftist followers, please explain why this stance is socially acceptable among the DSA. Make it make sense, lol Like, why is the Russo-Ukraine war the one conflict the DSA is extremely wishy washy over?
Kareem Rifai 🌐@KareemRifai

Just hours after Russia began its full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Darializa Chevalier blamed the US for "bullying Russia" and accused Washington of stoking the war for profit. Copy-and-paste Russian talking points. She's the Mamdani-backed challenger to Rep. Adriano Espaillat.

The victory of the three DSA candidates who won in New York City last night confirms what I wrote in @theFP after Mamdani's election. Antizionism is now a foundational dividing line of political sentiment, and anti-Jewish libels—and the mobilization around them—are an organized political force. We have not seen anything like this since the original emergence of Wilhelm Marr's "antisemitic" movement and the agitation surrounding the Dreyfus Affair in the late nineteenth century. Crucially, all three candidates promoted the genocide libel and gained moral credibility in the eyes of their constituents through their performative insistence on saying "genocide." It is simply impossible to fight anti-Jewish discrimination and violence today without recognizing that antizionism is both systemic in institutions and a popular movement on the ground. Tracking 'antisemitic incidents,' calling for more security, or expressing outrage at swastikas will not suffice. We are in a completely different era. Fighting antizionism as a political force means mobilizing as a political force and being as forceful in intervening in the public discourse as antizionists are themselves.

Again, there is just no coherent position where you rail about "NATO's war in Ukraine" (AKA completely whitewashing the country that invaded), while spending your entire existence screaming about ISRAEL. It just does not make any sense if you're trying to convince anyone that you have any sort of principles.

It’s mind-boggling that every elite gating mechanism of our society has been systematically ground down to the point where someone with this resume could waltz into one of the most prestigious financial institutions in the US and get an “executive director” position paying $300k

As a liberal progressive, I would be fine with the party moving left if these wins were about Medicare for all, reproductive rights, universal childcare, taxing billionaires, and creating affordable housing, But they weren’t.

A fundamental problem with YIMBYism in NYC is that the city is not designed to be ‘affordable.’ It’s less a real estate supply and demand question and more that of an extremely expensive public sector. It’s not in the city’s interest fiscally to attract more middle class NGO types who are essentially doing ‘back office intellectual work’ because those people are a net negative fiscally and they don’t pay much in taxes nor do they do work that meaningfully benefits the city (eg running small businesses, providing services, offering useful technical knowledge, etc. - NYC is a very complex 19th/ 20th century ‘machine’ that takes a lot of work to keep running). The most important people in NYC by far are the ultra rich, then maybe some very highly paid professionals, then the petit bourgeoisie and private sector working class, then maybe the public sector working class. The wordcel/ NGO types are a net NEGATIVE and the real project of DSA politics is to change the terms of political economy to make circumstances more favorable to them as a class. Specifically what this involves is a more bespoke welfare state: they don’t want to live in housing projects or work administrative jobs in the DOE. They want $200k a year NGO jobs doing Good Things and for the city to seize housing from landlords in hipster neighborhoods so they can live there. We get distracted by some of the bizarre ideological concoctions (eg ‘Islamo communism’) but what they’re trying to engineer is actually an interesting political project - it’s an update to the old ethnic patronage schemes but instead of being a member of an ethnic bloc the way you ‘get in’ here is based on degree type, employment sector, and Omnicause affirmation. This ‘class identity’ sounds very tenuous, incoherent, and contrived but they are making a run of it (while making a lot of enemies - we’ll see how it goes).

@shannonrwatts You’re willingly ignorant to not acknowledge how all of these issues intersect with Palestine. And btw liberal progressive is an oxymoron when you say you’re “fine with the party moving left” means you weren’t a progressive in the first place, idiot

@shannonrwatts Believe it or not, but leftists who believe in universal human rights without exceptions when it comes to Palestinians are also the ones who are willing to fight for those things you just mentioned. It’s not some “either/or” situation. Sorry every policy wasn’t in the chant.

@shannonrwatts I spoke with you before as a journalist. This is a surprise. The establishment Democratic party has made negative headway on taxing billionaires, before & after Sanders, so what are you defending here? The establishment spent millions burying Dems with these goals.
