The American education system is fixated on finding the latest method or system to get students reading and writing. Unfortunately, no hack exists. Reading is sometimes dull. Writing is often hard. You can’t entertain yourself to an education.

For kids who come in with headaches that are really hunger. Stomachaches that are really empty. I’m not supposed to. Technically against policy. Don’t care. Told my principal once. She looked at me for a long moment..... Opened her desk drawer. Showed me her stash. Crackers. Fruit snacks. Applesauce. “What drawer?” she said. We never spoke of it again. That sixth grader is in high school now. Came to find me last spring. “I just wanted you to know I’m okay. And that I remembered. I always will.” He volunteers at a food bank on weekends. Has since he was thirteen. Best granola bars I ever bought.

One of my "hotter" takes on this subject is every high school could implement this tomorrow, and it wouldn't make a big difference. 99% of 14-18 year olds don't care about money. They care about dating, friends, making varsity, and getting As & Bs so mom/dad don't yell at them.

@CoachHPrice This was actually the last straw for one of the middle school teachers in our district. Kid you not. He was a good friend of mine, but he was young and stumbled out of the gate, couldn’t act maturely, pissed off the wrong people, same old story. He’s a teacher somewhere else now.

Teachers, this is important. Regardless of what your administration says, put the March Madness games on today. They are core memories for kids. I can still remember exactly where I sat for certain games. If you get in trouble it’s ok. They won’t fire you 😂

@teacherinRI Mostly. I think there's some validity in the question. They are expressing concern that at least some parts of the education system are irrelevant in the current age of AI/tech.

"When am I ever going to use this?" is the most honest feedback a student can give you. And we dismiss it every time.

Every public high school in America should be teaching how credit cards work, how to get a mortgage, and what mutual funds are and how they function. 16th century English literature is great, but how about equipping our children with what they need in the REAL world.

We thought designing a thoughtful education model requires also requires analyzing the daily and annual schedule to ensure it makes sense This is one of those other 'paper walls' of education, i.e. a thing that when you ask why it's done that way, nobody really knows. Education has many of these paper walls where the only justification is "it's always been done that way"
