@daveweigel "Affirming" the belief that a person is the wrong gender is akin to agreeing with the anorexic's decision to eat less food. It might make them momentarily happy, but their mental illness will inevitably cause distress and pain. They deserve treatment for their illness.

@BrentleyGC I feel bad for her. But she needs to fight her mental battle on the practice range. The sport can't tolerate this type of slow play in a tournament.

As Shoemaker gets lit up by social media, it's important to note some context: 1. She had major arm surgery last October after playing through "excruciating pain" for seven months 2. She's 100% physically now, but she's still fighting a mental battle, trying to convince her brain that there won't be pain 3. Pre-injury, Shoemaker was "one of the fastest players" USC coach Justin Silverstein has ever coached. “Just trying to reassure myself that there isn’t pain anymore,” Shoemaker explained. “I’ve been struggling with it for the last four months, just being fully committed to hitting the ball.” Added Silverstein: “It’s not easy what she’s going through as far as being able to swing comfortably and confidently. She’s taking it back and her brain is still firing like it’s going to hurt, and that’s how she played all last spring.”

“This is part of her routine” I would have already been on the green waiting before she pulled the trigger.

Let's assume a 2.5 index (not a vanity index!). Assuming Augusta has course rating of 78 and slope of 155, the course handicap is 9. Golfers of all skill levels will tend to average ~3 shots above course handicap. This takes our hero to an average of 12 over par. Let's add an additional 10 shots of difficulty kicker on top of that. That puts them at an average of 22 over par per round. They would average 94 strokes each round. 88 over par over 4 rounds. They started at a 100 under par, went 88 over, and end up finishing at 12 under par. 12 under wins 6 of the last 10 events outright, plus one event where 12 under ties for the lead. Is 10 shots enough of a kicker? For some I think it would be. They won't get in too much trouble off the tee, it's the greens that will provide the biggest pucker factor...

Here was the debate last night: non tournament tested club golfer with low single digit GHIN starts the masters at -100. Does he win? My answer is a strong no chance.

@KevinOConnor I would argue that today's NBA is less forgiving of Dame-level defensive ability versus even as recently as 5-10 years ago. I think it is too big of a risk to take him top-5.

Watch Arkansas face off against Arizona on Thursday night and you'll see Darius Acuff shapeshift. One possession, he's snaking through a ball screen with that low dribble and impossible touch around the rim — full Kyrie mode. The next, he's sprinting off a handoff and pulling up from the logo before the defense can even blink — full Dame mode. Then the other team inbounds the ball and he's standing somewhere near half-court, watching his man curl off a screen on the other side of the floor — full Trae Young mode. It's the most fascinating offensive package in college basketball attached to the most exhausting defensive effort. Anyone who’s watched Acuff knows about the defensive effort lapses, the awareness issues, and the size limitations at a generous 6-foot-3 that don't go away. These are legitimate flags and they belong in every honest evaluation. But Saturday night showed why some scouts forgive those flaws. He scored 12 of Arkansas' final 15 points and, with the game tied at 83 with three minutes left, Acuff went on a personal 7-0 run — with two layups and a 3-pointer from the wing with a minute left. He added two free throws with eight seconds remaining to close it at 94-88. His 36-point night is the most by any Razorback in NCAA tournament history and broke the program's single-season scoring record. He and Chris Paul are the only freshmen since 1973 to open their tournament careers with back-to-back 20-and-5 games. He has 60 points and 13 assists in two games. He's 19. Acuff doesn’t do much defending at the college level. Yes, that’s real. And yes, if Arkansas loses to Arizona the odds are his inability to get stops will be one of the factors why. And yes, maybe it’ll continue to be a problem in the NBA. But at some point the avalanche of offensive credentials just buries the counterargument. Irving is a future Hall of Famer and a champion who hit one of the greatest shots in the history of the Finals. Dame is a future Hall of Famer and led his team to a conference finals. Trae is a complicated case — his best days in Atlanta are behind him and he'll need to rejuvenate in a disastrous Washington situation — but he still gave that franchise seven years of appointment television and a conference finals run. The offensive value was worth a top-five pick … well, as long as you're not giving away Luka Dončić to get him. The question with smaller guards is always about whether they do enough on offense to compensate. And with a football player frame and a high work ethic, Acuff does have the tools to be a competitive defender when he's surrounded by more talent. A player this special offensively is worth a top-five pick, whether or not his defense is a red flag.

@deaninserra They are Marxists. USSR used charges of racism and discrimination against the US to great effect. But the Soviets didn't care about equality and freedom, only power and control. Today's Marxists are no different. Women and Gay rights are only a tool to wield against the US.

Something that has been confusing to me for the longest time is the left being either pro, or silent on Islam. Christian Nationalism (which they still haven’t defined) is a national emergency, Islamic practices towards women and views on gays is a nothing burger. Why?

The reason you think there is a moderate position on transgenderism is because: 1.) You know nothing about it, 2.) You've had not thoughts about it beyond what occur to a total ignoramus who knows nothing about it. Whereas, I know that there is only one possible resolution to the transgender issue (all public and private institutions must stop treating fake shit like it is real and stop forcing others to treat fake shit like it is real) because 1.) I know a lot about it and 2.) I've thought a lot about it based on what I know about it.

The Assassination of #Khamenei – Initial Implications A. A Foundational Event for the Regime For more than three decades, Khamenei shaped the ideological, institutional, and strategic character of the Islamic Republic. His death is not merely a leadership transition — it is a foundational event that could shake the entire structure of the regime. B. The Succession Mechanism – Theory vs. Reality According to the constitution, the Assembly of Experts is responsible for convening and appointing a new Supreme Leader. In practice, this has happened only once (1989), and even then the decision was effectively shaped behind the scenes through political understandings among key power brokers. It is therefore likely that the real decision will again be made within a narrow circle of elites rather than through a purely formal process. C. The Future of the Doctrine of Velayat-e Faqih Beyond the identity of the successor lies a deeper question: the future status of the doctrine of Velayat-e Faqih. Will Iran maintain the model of a strong, centralized Supreme Leader as shaped by Khamenei, or could the system evolve toward a more collective or limited leadership structure? This will be a crucial test for the regime’s ideological continuity. D. A Succession Vacuum The death of President Ebrahim Raisi — widely viewed as a leading candidate for succession — deepened the uncertainty. Names previously mentioned as potential successors include: Hassan Khomeini – grandson of Ayatollah Khomeini, perceived as relatively moderate. Sadeq Larijani – a senior institutional figure. Hassan Rouhani – former president, though his relationship with Khamenei was complex. Mojtaba Khamenei – the Supreme Leader’s son, long rumored as a possible candidate. At present, no clear consensus candidate exists. E. A Major Shock — But Not Necessarily Regime Collapse Khamenei was a central pillar of the system, yet the regime rests on multiple power centers, foremost among them the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). The IRGC has significant political, military, and economic interests in preserving the current order and possesses the capacity to stabilize the system if needed. F. Low Probability of Immediate Dramatic Change In the absence of an organized and capable opposition, and given the relative cohesion of Iran’s security elites, most assessments would suggest that even such a dramatic event is unlikely to trigger immediate revolutionary change. Rather, it may lead to an internal recalibration process. G. Interim Leadership or Rapid Appointment? A critical question is whether a temporary coordinating figure will be appointed until a permanent successor is selected, or whether a swift appointment will be made to project stability and continuity. The decision will reflect the balance of power among competing factions. H. Regional and Religious Implications Will Iran’s regional proxies, particularly Hezbollah, escalate as part of a narrative of revenge? Will senior Shiite clerical authorities — such as Grand Ayatollah Sistani in Iraq — issue religious rulings framing retaliation as a duty? The response of the so-called “Axis of Resistance” will serve as an important indicator of post-event regime cohesion and control. I. Implications for Negotiations with the West If the regime survives and stabilizes, it is unlikely to project flexibility in the near term. On the contrary, it may adopt a more hardline posture in order to signal strength and consolidate internal legitimacy. J. The Beginning of a Different Era Khamenei’s death would mark the historical end of a distinct era — but it remains unclear whether any internal actors will be able or willing to leverage the moment for structural transformation. But, even if the regime endures, Iran may emerge different, with a recalibrated internal balance of power and altered leadership dynamics. Conclusion: This would be a dramatic event with the potential to reshape both Iran’s internal political order and the broader regional landscape. However, the strength of state institutions, the IRGC, and the absence of a viable alternative political force suggest that any change — if it occurs — is more likely to be gradual and managed rather than immediate and revolutionary. #iranisraelwar
