I have seen this mistake over and over again: people think RL is a solution, whereas RL is really defined as a problem. So abandoning RL in favor of method X mentioned in this talk does not make much sense to me. I would instead argue that the current solutions to RL are still crude and not yet practical in real experiential world, largely because they lack the right abstractions — both for representing past experience of agent, and for temporal abstractions over future coarse of actions. In fact, there is a significant overlap between what this talk advocates for and what much of the RL community already believes is necessary for scalable and practical intelligence.

.@ylecun making his usual impassioned case for LLMs and RL 🍒 for world models ... just kidding 🤓 Thanks Yann for the thought-provoking talk.

The bitter lesson in 26 words: Don’t be distracted by human knowledge, as AI has been historically. Instead focus on methods for creating knowledge that scale with computation, like search and learning.

@GaryMarcus I find it interesting that many commenters are blaming the messenger and saying you should have had backups. As soon as you give write access, which you need to in this agentic workflow, all other kinds of problems can pop up even if you have back ups.

@AmirJoudaki Great work! This is one of the most important problems in AI once we move to continual learning with non stationary environment. Any proven suggestion or solution to tackle it?

Neural nets don’t just forget. Sometimes, after long training, they lose the ability to learn at all. In our #ICLR2026 poster, we model Loss of Plasticity as gradient dynamics trapped in invariant manifolds: 🔴 frozen units, 🔵 cloned units. The video makes the traps visible.

Tbh I have no clue, and I don't know anyone who knows anyone who does! this is going to spike oil and gas prices in the US and also hurt the global economy badly specially poor countries. If it sustain long term, it could hurt Iran’s economy let alone GCC!, but they only need to hold out until the midterms and hope Trump loses his allies in Congress.

Is the US blockade aimed at forcing the reopening of the strait, or getting the Iranian regime to accept the U.S. deal terms?

@mehdiy_fa Iranians are one of the most polarized societies at the moment, with little unity among themselves.

The majority of my Iranian audience is against any negotiations with the Iranian regime. I also don’t support JCPOA-style deals with the regime. Trading nuclear limits for limited sanctions relief tends to strengthen the regime while allowing it to maintain its anti-American and anti-Israel posture, continue building a secret arsenal, and increase the risk of future instability and harm to Iran and the region. I would still consider a genuine agreement that requires meaningful policy changes from the regime. This could include normalization of relations with the United States and an end to its ideological hostility toward Israel, potentially through acceptance of a two-state solution implying recognition of Israel. Such shifts could create conditions more conducive to democratic change in Iran. For decades, the regime’s opposition to the West and fixation on Israel have helped it maintain its support base. Removing those ideological pillars would leave the regime in a weaker position. If the Iranian regime is not prepared to take these steps, a ceasefire is preferable to a flawed deal. To enable a meaningful agreement, the United States and Israel may also need to show greater flexibility on technical issues regarding nuclear and missile limits while placing more emphasis on securing substantive ideological change from Iran. I also wish the US had included a few demands from the Iranian people, such as the release of political prisoners and lifting internet censorship. Even if rejected outright, it would have been a strong gesture toward the Iranian people.

Here's the Iranian delegates to the talks. Never during the JCPOA did I see such a large & senior Iranian delegation. And Qalibaf may meet directly w/ Vance(!) Before, the Iranians refused such meetings. They agree now because they see themselves in a far stronger position.

I always ask myself: why can’t they follow China’s path? That is, while focusing on the economy and national integrity still main independence from both the west and the east. We don’t know the faith of Mojtaba but can they have a leader like Deng Xiaoping, who emerged after Mao’s death ( aka khamenei), shifting the country from ideology to economic reform? Something I wish for…

The Iranian regime survived the America’s onslaught. Now it faces a real choice: become Vietnam after 1975 and reintegrate with the world, or become North Korea after 1953 and isolate itself for decades. The path is theirs.

@mehdiy_fa Shame on the journalists and media that DO NOT condemn such war-crime rhetorics and mention it as if it is normal if west does it. If this were a matter of race issue in the US, there would be universal condemnation across all so called liberal platforms

Normalizing the use of nuclear weapons or threatening the destruction of civilian infrastructure is unjustifiable and criminal. Leading major wars require steady, disciplined, and clear messaging.
