“If you press red you always survive so only stupid people would pick blue” probably goes hard as an argument if you’re 15 and fail to take into account what even a 10-20% loss of population would do to the world + all the children you'd lose.
MrBeast@MrBeast

Everyone on earth takes a private vote by pressing a red or blue button. If more than 50% of people press the blue button, everyone survives. If less than 50% of people press the blue button, only people who pressed the red button survive. Which button would you press? BE HONEST.

Did you actually encounter people who expressed the second one? I assume most everyone who chooses red wishes the everyone would be logical enough to pick red or have the blue reach 50%. I HAVE encountered many on here who seem to believe that people that choose red actually want people to die. But no “reds” actually expressing that sentiment.

You could've just said "I pick red because I want to live no matter what, but I hope blue wins because all else being equal it'd be better if a button game didn't kill a bunch of people." But you really went with "If not literally 100% of people press red, they deserve to die."

I have opinions on the new red/blue button debate. I interpret it as a test of whether or not you are in a high trust or low trust environment. Choosing the red button guarantees your own safety but also ensures people will die because there is invariably going to be people who will vote blue for whatever reason. But choosing the blue button is only a viable option IF you are in a high trust environment. The blue/red button question, in my opinion, is more of a question of “do you trust the group you’re in?” Pure altruism & trust vs. guaranteed self-preservation So it depends on the group. All other things being equal, I don’t particularly want blue voters to die, so I’d ideally vote blue. But I’m not going to stake my life on that if the group I’m in is particularly untrustworthy. So again… it depends on the group. If I was in a situation where all the other voters were my closest friends & family, obviously I would choose blue. But if I’m in a group of people who don’t know each other and are openly hostile to each other, I am pressing red.

@0xPBIT assuming everyone makes the moral choice then ofc the answer is blue but its not the most logical one in a flawed world

You live in a world of fully rational people who all make the correct decision. If more than 50% of people press the blue button, everyone survives. If less than 50% of people press the blue button, only people who pressed the red button survive. Which button do they press?

@MarcinSmogo7 @JonSaidThat @Timcast Yes, and how unbearably sad would that be? The more I think about this, the more I think hitting red is the right answer and it’s the right answer for everyone and you’d hope everyone would hit red but if they don’t, oh well.

@MarcinSmogo7 @JonSaidThat @Timcast I wouldn’t. And come to think of it, if I really did have to make that choice, alone, the fact that I may be walking out on my family may factor into it. It’s a very big call to say that you are morally obliged to put yourself at a material risk of dying for someone else

@Hunter_RileyG @JonSaidThat @Timcast This is not the original issue, there your child which lets say is 1 or 2 is alone in front of 2 buttons and chooses randomly. But I'll humor you. In your variation im telling them to press red, but id like to think me personally would still choose blue.

@MarcinSmogo7 @JonSaidThat @Timcast Ok, so that tilts it towards your view, I’d agree but the same question is still hanging around. I don’t have a settled view. If you go back to the other variation I suggested, no matter how many children, and others that don’t see the opportunity, I’m telling my kids to hit red

@MarcinSmogo7 @JonSaidThat @Timcast What about a variation - suppose every family is put together. You’re in a room with your immediate family, husband, wife and kids, and you have to make a joint decision about which button to press. I am in no doubt whatsoever as to which one I’m telling my kids to press

@Hunter_RileyG @JonSaidThat @Timcast So either you choose yourself or you choose to stand together and save everyone that can't properly choose for themselves. I've been adamant about this because there is too much people on twitter who think that if you are dumb you deserve to die.

@MarcinSmogo7 @Hunter_RileyG @Timcast people on the internet who will obviously press red but can't bring themselves to be honest around their audience duping thousands into pressing blue is a huge one.

@MarcinSmogo7 @JonSaidThat @Timcast Of course it applies to both sides. The application here is that you are cocksure of yourself and my only point is that the logic of everyone pressing the red button is an open question worth looking at. I don’t have a settled view. So, in this case you are one and I am the other

@Hunter_RileyG @JonSaidThat @Timcast Btw altruism is doing good for everyone even if it's bad for you. This has nothing to do with it. It's just not being a sociopathic egomaniac that only cares about his survival. Humans are social creatures.

@MarcinSmogo7 @JonSaidThat @Timcast Not quite same for blue. Blue comes with a risk of your own demise. The difference between me and you is that you are certain that you know the answer. Where as I am not saying I know any answer. I am just open to considering the question of which is the better path

@Hunter_RileyG @JonSaidThat @Timcast I just think anyone who isn't a sociopath or doesn't have extreme need to prove he is smarter than, sees blue= save everyone and presses it. All this " if everyone presses red, everyone survives" yeah same for blue btw. I think people treat this as blue=democrats, red=republicans

@MarcinSmogo7 @JonSaidThat @Timcast I don’t know, but it’s not over-complicating it by pointing out the “everyone should press red” issue/conundrum. It’d be odd to ignore it. You seem to think everyone should press blue because that’s wonderful altruism. Or is it just dumb altruism? It’s a legit question

Can somebody who is still voting red explain their position to me without getting mad? (Preferably without saying I am mad, actually) I still don't get it

@MarcinSmogo7 @JonSaidThat @Timcast That’s not one bit true. The point made is 100% correct. The best path to the best result is in fact for everyone to press red. This is just a simple deduction. You can’t talk about this thought experiment without also talking about that point

@cptmbf @PITTpersons I said this: “A female sheep is called a ewe. If a sheep has the gender = female it does not follow that the sheep is a woman” and you replied with this: “So sheep can be women according to you”. Explain yourself or fuck off
