Shri Arvind Kumar (@arvindtw), Director General of STPI, while addressing at TiEcon Chandigarh, highlighted the transformative journey of India’s IT and startup ecosystem and emphasized the growing role of deep tech, innovation, and inclusive growth in shaping the country’s digital future. Key highlights of the address are: ➡️ STPI, established in 1991, played a pivotal role in enabling India’s IT exports to grow from ₹52 crore to more than ₹20 lakh crore. ➡️Post Startup India (2015), startups became a mainstream career option beyond traditional jobs. Phase 1 of the startup ecosystem focused on scale, speed, and capital deployment, whereas Phase 2 (current phase) emphasizes deep tech innovation, sustainability, and global competitiveness. ➡️The next wave of growth is being driven by deep tech sectors such as AI, semiconductor manufacturing, space tech, and electronics system design, with a strong focus on strategic independence and innovation leadership. ➡️Better-quality startups are now emerging from Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities, and these startups are global-first from Day 1 rather than local-first. This democratization of innovation is a game-changing trend. ➡️Earlier, investors focused on quick valuation gains; however, the focus has now shifted to intellectual property (IP), global collaborations (MOUs), and strategic sector relevance. Domestic investment is rising significantly, reflecting the maturity of the ecosystem, with investors actively seeking high-quality startups rather than just safe bets. ➡️Under initiatives like the India AI Mission, India is positioning itself as a global leader in AI and deep tech. ➡️ India has transitioned from being a service provider to an innovation leader.
