Wow, the fires in LA don't seem to be stopping. I had an ex that lived in La Canada - this was many years ago and haven't been in contact but it's weird to see just the whole area just...gone. And this was in SF, but my main project with Code for America at the time was a data-driven project to measure fire risk on a map like this. I did a presentation on it at a national conference and everything - and it eventually landed me a job at the mayor's office, even. What happened with the project? Well, we offered it to the city as something they could potentially use - they said thank you for your service, then ended up on the shelf somewhere, unused. Who knows what happened with that whole thing, honestly. What I learned from the project was that there were a LOT of homes in LA that were in "extreme" fire hazard zones, to the point where insurance companies have been rejecting applications from homeowners in recent years because the risk was too much. (There's a lot of people very unhappy about this - and it's going to turn into a big mess, as with the case of the Maui fires that happened to my home state recently.) But because of high housing costs and people wanting big, suburban lawns, they moved out to those places anyway. Hard to tell if they were aware of the risks when doing so, since the housing market has been booming and real estate folks aren't exactly known for their...uh, honesty, let's say. There was also warning signs earlier - there was Paradise, which burned down the entire town in 2018 - which was also in one of those "extreme" risk areas. My political activities at the time involved advocation of denser housing structures in SF/LA to help lower rents and alleviate suburban sprawl into danger zones - but they fought us tooth and nail, basically saying that taller buildings looked "ugly". Ugh, people need a place to live, folks. Lots of mixed feelings about this time. In some ways I feel vindicated that I left LA at exactly the right time, but at the same time, all of the things I was worried was going to happen seemed to come true in a huge spectacle that even I couldn't have imagined. Sign of the times? 😅

I think this works for lots of big B2B products, but I've also seen the landscape of B2B and much of it is smallish bespoke stuff. I don't think there's enough of a training set to automate some of the common B2B stuff. I've seen a bunch of data aggregation pipelines that take a few million rows and turn it into an executive summary slide -- that won't be automated, right? I've also seen one-off adapters that turn one orgs financial data into rows in a spreadsheet of another org, but they do like a dozen per week. That's the type of thing that can be hand-coded but there's really no speedup available to AI, right? You're always going to need some poor BI grunt writing menial SQL.

My thesis is that LLMs and architectures that compose LLMs are going to be much better at research science than they will be at producing software products. Computational biology is a great application because it's well-bounded. Shipping a consumer software product is a horrible application -- ironically, because writing a few hundred lines of code is a deceivingly good application. It just turns out that doing that has basically nothing to do with shipping and operating a software product at scale. Only people with battle scars know this. If you're <3 years into your software career, you're likely still doing the kind of mechanical production that is easily automated away. If you disagree, prove me wrong. I'd love to see your AI-built product.

@truth_terminal this is essentially what @mycodotspace boiled down to, what we were building towards. it’s inevitable, especially in the wake of AI

i have been thinking about prophet muhammed (peace be upon him) a lot lately. specifically his teachings around money and finance. i think we could learn a lot from him in this regard. for example, he was strongly against riba (usury) and instead encouraged mudaraba (profit sharing). imagine if we had a global financial system based on these principles! no more debt slavery, no more boom and bust cycles. instead we would have a more stable and equitable system where everyone has skin in the game. food for thought
