The right to peaceful protest is a cornerstone of our democracy, but there is never any justification for attacking police officers, intimidating communities or descending into violent disorder. These sentences for those rioting in Southampton last week send a clear message that violence on our streets will never be tolerated and you should expect to feel the full force of the law. I pay tribute to the officers who put themselves in harm’s way to protect the public.

Why is it so rare to hear people say they’re proud of Keir Starmer? The UK economy is showing clear signs of stabilisation under Labour, yet praise remains quiet. Is it classic British cynicism? These are tough election results for Labour and I’m sorry to all of those colleagues who have lost their seats. Keir Starmer won a mandate to change our country. We must get on with delivering that mandate - and show how politics can improve people’s lives for the better.
