Some people just enjoy stealing. They might dress it up in politics or ideology after the fact - but they enjoy the act itself. I was in a store once with an acquaintance to grab a sandwich. He didn't buy anything, I was confused. When we got outside, he pulled several candy bars out of his pockets, smiling widely. Only when I disapproved did he claim he was "getting back" at the store because he once worked there and was treated badly.

Of course Mamdani was a no-show. There's nothing for him to gain politically from this, and really that's his only calculation ever. The entire incident is politically inconvenient for him -- a black gang member murdered another young black kid on a playground for absolutely no reason at all. He can't make any political hay from that. And he'd have to listen to furious and heartbroken mom demand her son's murderer be locked up forever. And that's just not something Zohran is interested in hearing, particularly not from someone he can't morally condescend to with his dumb grin. This mom doesn't want to hear his lectures about how we actually need to erase the gang database and close Rikers Island and decarcerate the prison population. So why would Zohran waste his time on her? He might have to pretend to be normal for a minute. He might have to admit to her that her son's murderer should indeed be in prison. And that's just not something Zohran is prepared to say to anyone. Because his revolutionary politics requires murderers to walk the streets freely. So he gets a few bad headlines about being a no-show, and gets back to making ridiculous Tik Tok videos. In a week, nobody remembers anything.
