Just returned from a pretty big trip. With just six guys and this picture from 1935, we managed to locate, reach, and photograph a truly hidden wonder: King Edward VIII Falls, the tallest waterfall in Guyana. After extensive research, interviews with locals, and discussion with the Guyanese government, it's clear: We are among just a handful of people who have ever seen this incredible place.

when mount tambora in indonesia erupted in 1815, the volcano killed all 10,000+ tambora people and wiped out their culture entirely. their extinct language was uniquely non-austronesian & we only know about it from a 48-word vocabulary list collected by colonial officials in 1814

Drove from San Jose to SF for the first time ever today (I’m not from California). Absolutely shocked, floored, etc. at the incredible lack of development. Just mile after mile of trees and hills, not a single building or road, in what’s probably a top five value-per-acre area. I see why people are mad about NIMBYism now…

@bronzebust We have so much pristine open land here in California. Check out the Redwoods North of San Francisco, and the Sierra Mountains. California is blessed with incredible beauty. I hope that you enjoy your time here.

@v63sfx I actually had no idea this post would get people so upset. I was genuinely surprised to see such large protected areas near a big city.

@bronzebust You knew the NIMBYism sentence would rile people up. That's the thing about Twitter. People are hooked on the back and forth. It's kinda like gaming.

@bronzebust You obviously did not take the 101, which makes me wonder if you really took this drive.

@bronzebust You’re so full of shit. SJ to The City along 101 is one of the most densely developed areas in the state. Fuck off. Go home. Pray to whatever gods you believe in I don’t find you.

@TheIndyRick @JerryTurin Thanks! It's been an amazing trip; Lake Tahoe, Kings Canyon NP, and San Francisco all in one week. I really understand the hype around California much more now.

@bronzebust @JerryTurin California is a special place. You're spot on with your assessment, but you also unknowingly triggered the ideologically captured who eagerly become offended at the slightest jab. I hope you enjoy your time here. It truly is a beautiful state.

@johnvmcdonnell @JerryTurin Right? I'm pretty taken aback by the replies to this post; I didnt mean to imply that all forests in California should be paved over or whatever.

@__apf__ That makes sense, but very mountainous areas in wealthy parts of CO, UT, NM, etc. have all been built on. And the mountains there are much steeper and snowier! Seems like it's mostly due to the California Coastal Commission, state parks, etc.

@bronzebust I think you still misunderstand what I'm explaining: it is so mountainous that you cannot easily build there, so they leave it as wilderness out of practicality. All of the flatter areas are developed instead. Hence silicon "valley"
