After he won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1957, Albert Camus wrote a letter of thanks to his favorite childhood teacher, whom he'd never forgotten. It's beautiful.

Herdwick twin lambs! The first of 2026. The world outside may feel more uncertain, more unfair, more unethical and at times more screwed up, but not here in the lambing barn. Where things are as simple and pure as they’ve ever been. ❤️

Summer of 1944, Hungarian Jews arrive in Auschwitz. Within 4 months, right before the end of WWII, the Nazis who were losing on all fronts and low on all resources, mobilized everything to make sure their killing of little Jewish children continues. The Nazis would rather lose and kill more Jews than survive. That is how sick and destructive antisemitism is.

You have to be a deeply sick person to be proud of having stopped support to a country fighting for its survival. That support would have saved lives.

Douthat has spent 11 years publicly talking himself into a permission structure to vote for Trump, even though he knows better & despite J6. It’s depressing He clearly hasn’t spent much time in the democratic backsliding political science. He blithely dismisses 20 years of theory & data - including Trump & Orban cases - with one counter-datapoint (the recent Hungarian election) to protect what really matters: his cherished ideological prior that it’s morally acceptable to vote for Trump
Brian Beutler@brianbeutler

1. The new MAGA line on Orban—“if your entrenched ruling party can lose everything in a wave election, you are not living in an authoritarian state”—is fallacious, and something they plainly don’t believe. Unless maybe they’re prepared to abide Trump-style abuses turned on them.

“There are estimates that show that up to 14 million people will die over the next five years alone, unnecessarily, due to the cuts to USAID,” says whistleblower Nicholas Enrich, who worked at the agency under four administrations. “And we're already starting to see the impacts. In fact, 750,000 people have already died, most of those children, according to conservative estimates.”

Residential buildings have been almost completely destroyed following a nighttime russian attack. So far, 14 people are known to have been killed (including a 12-year-old girl) and more than 85 injured, some of whom are children… This is one of the most large-scale attacks by the russian army against the civilian population of Ukraine. The world must not remain silent!
