Fixing the issues that are making Europe uncompetitive would necessarily entail getting rid of a lot of that comfort. No more infinite pension money for boomers, no more inability to get fired, no more endless vacation required by law.

I work in a critical industry, and a dangerous one at that. You wanna know what my greatest fear is?
It's not getting crushed by faulty machinery, or getting some lethal chemical in my eyes, or losing a hand in some industrial accident. No, it's someone getting killed because they, or the people around them, decided to skip a few steps.
It almost happened yesterday, guy walks right in front of a moving forklift withoutt a fucking care in the world. Driver had to slam the brakes and still got within a literal inch of the guy. It did happen a few weeks ago, where a guy in a sister-facility turned himself into human barbecue on a CNC when he opened it up without disconnecting the power supply.
I can't emphasize enough, if you're EVER working with a non, to any extent, and they're responsible for something that can effect or harm you if something goes wrong, they're not responsible. YOU are responsible, and you need to consider both as being workplace hazards. If you're travelling, don't trust them to safeguard your safety. ALWAYS DOUBLE CHECK. This goes for all situations like that of course, but doubly so when you're abroad.

In 2007, the standards of living in the United States and Western Europe were similar, and most people don’t realize how much things have diverged since the US boomed after the global financial crisis and Europe didn’t. They don’t fully understand how we’re living and we don’t fully understand how they’re living; even when we visit Europe as tourists, we don’t see their tiny, sad flats and their depressing grocery stores. That is why Europeans visiting for the World Cup are going to, like, a Waffle House or a Taco Bell and losing their minds. Stuff we don’t even like or care about is wildly superior to everything everywhere else. We have no idea how rich we are.

I think the SpaceX IPO was essentially an exit and liquidity event for a wildly overvalued company, and that Musk’s wealth generally is wildly overstated. I also think these recent developments have nothing to do with a lifetime of poor choices and zero personal accountability.

The craziest part of Musk becoming a trillionaire is that I remember when the federal deficit was only 160 billion (2007)
At that time, the national debt was 9 trillion, which seemed like an unfathomably large number.
Now the national debt is $40 trillion, the deficit is $1.5 trillion when things are going well but no one talks about it because the Republicans have given up on the concept of fiscal sanity.
