@mikehakata And here we are outside one of London’s many sacrificial nurseries where the poorest children are being poisoned by LTN displacement. Not sure how you all sleep at night, knowing you are harming other people’s children. This is not climate action. It’s the rich stealing clean air

With so much going on in the world this week I’ve been reluctant to highlight Oxford’s traffic trials & tribulations, but this post really highlights the painful reality. Those involved directly & those not speaking out against should be ashamed!

@LondonTrafficW1 But we all knew this, he just couldn't have been honest to begin with and claimed it was for air quality. Why lie?

@ShimanoSteve @carltonreid Also what's the difference in polutinn between a 5 & 25 min journey? Is it x5 as much pollution or is there a hockey stick effect? Replicate this across the millions of extra journey's and it's clear #LTNs are not designed to reduce pollution and increase air quality

@carltonreid Don’t you think that a vehicle journey taking 23 mins (when it took 5 mins, preLTN) is shocking? Commercial, industrial & private vehicles (and poss buses) will all be caught up the displaced traffic driving the long way round. And what about residents on displacement routes?

Today I tested the claim that a 5 minute car trip now takes 45 mins thanks to a new LTN. Even though it was Friday afternoon rush hour before Bank Holiday weekend the car trip took me 23 mins. (And I suspect the 5 min claim was an underestimate.) youtube.com/watch?v=S1wmF8…

@ioisours We all knew this though. Why don't TFL invest in their mass transit systems to encourage people out of cars? It would create space for cyclists to do so on quieter roads ... Or would that not be a good spend of budget compared to restricting infrastructure for the masses?

HEADLINE NEWS: LTNs can cause traffic jams and slow buses, TfL admits By Steve Bird Transport for London (TFL) has been forced to admit controversial Low Traffic Neighbourhoods (LTNs) can shift traffic onto boundary roads and slow bus times. The congestion became so bad in one borough that the transport authority had to alter traffic light timings to allow more “green time” to cope with the “increased flow” of vehicles on one major route sandwiched between LTNs. The problem was spotted because buses were being delayed due to more traffic. TfL was contacted by residents in Crystal Palace after they noted “persistent traffic congestion” and then traffic lights favouring vehicles rather than pedestrians after LTNs were introduced in South Norwood and Crystal Palace. In response to a Freedom of Information (FoI) request, TfL revealed four traffic light timing reviews were carried out at three Crystal Palace sites between 2020, when the LTNs were introduced, and 2022 “with particular focus on bus performance, pedestrians, congestion and impact from Low Traffic Neighbourhoods”. It adds that the reviews were “in response to the Croydon LTNs increasing the flow on Church Road,” the A214 which is a boundary road between the LTNs. Advertisement Buses delayed Critics of the schemes, introduced by the Government to “promote walking and cycling” claim they simply shift cars and pollution from invariably affluent areas onto busier main roads where poorer communities are more likely to live. The FoI response from TfL says: “The cycle time for all three [traffic light] sites increased from 88 seconds to 96 seconds, allowing for additional green time.” It adds: “The increased flow on Church Road caused by the Croydon LTNs was derived by comparing bus journey times to pre-LTN bus times, which did show an increase. “It was therefore concluded that buses were delayed as a result of increased congestion and flow on Church Road. “The bus data used for this assessment was taken directly from the bus as it travels on the street, and it is then compared to the bus timetable.” Advertisement A spokesman for Social and Environmental Justice, which highlights what it sees as the injustices of LTNs, said: “This is yet more powerful evidence that LTNs cause traffic congestion and slow down buses. “So often it is the poorer areas which are losing out. It is time the authorities ended their obsession with LTNs which have no role in tackling traffic problems.” 'Making a difference to public health' Nick Owen, TfL’s head of network performance, said road changes, such as LTNs, “affect traffic patterns” requiring the authority to “put in place improvements, such as signal timing reviews” to have a “positive impact”. “By committing to a programme that encourages more walking and cycling through schemes including LTNs, we’re not only avoiding a growth in congestion across the capital, but also making a real difference to public health and air quality,” he added. Advertisement TfL said bus journey times from Crystal Palace show performance is “in line with 2019 averages”. A spokesman for Sadiq Khan, the Mayor of London, who is a supporter of this element of the Conservative Government’s transport policy, said: “Overall, research shows that LTNs do not simply shift traffic from one place to another but lead to an overall reduction in motor vehicles on roads.” Croydon Council has since scrapped the schemes after “examining the assessments” and finding many of the local residents were against them. telegraph.co.uk/news/2023/04/2…

@GabriellaSGG Any idea why there are traffic counters down at the other end of windmill road? Currently tracking during holidays when a main tributary road up out of Brentford to Ealing is closed? Doesn't seem like an honest data set of it's being used for any planning decisions

@wapalytics @VeritasBarnes @StPaulsSchool I cycle 1000s of miles a year in all places, but would like anyone 8-80 to cycle not share the road w drivers who are on mobiles phones, drivers who don't see you, drivers speeding, in mega SUVs etc.

@RuthMayorcas @VeritasBarnes @StPaulsSchool You are different, I am happy to cycle on roads and share the road with cars, and yes I believe that the most vulnerable should be protected in this case which is the pedestrian. That would be a terrible crossing with bikes flying past you. Cyclists can use the road. Simples

@wapalytics @VeritasBarnes @StPaulsSchool you think people walking are more at risk from those cycling than those driving - seriously? And how do you view those of us who cycle? are we not worthy of protection from tons of metal driven carelessly, dangerously? Are we somehow 'different'?

@VeritasBarnes @StPaulsSchool I went yesterday - it is absolutely beyond belief that there are no plans for #safecycling now or in the future - or at least as one of the young pple there explained we can #cycle over the top w the traffic, but we can't cycle w those walking cos of danger to them?

There needs to be a completely objective survey by specialists not linked to any local authority into the traffic policies of LTNs, road closures, rapidly imposed ultra low traffic zones, congestion, levels of air pollution and punitive highway robbery fines imposed by councils!

Weekend FT letter says Low Traffic Neighbourhoods were implemented so rapidly, without basic data, v difficult to persuade locals of all political persuasions they just shift traffic from one street to another “increasing congestion ..and pollution”. Yes!

@RuthMayorcas @guardian How is this click bait? click bait uses sensational titles to drive traffic (ironic) to certain sites, this is an accurate account of the state of pedalling hierarchy. Thanks @guardian for confirming what everyone already thinks about these giant child/grocery delivery machines!

@AirQBR @willnorman @wfcouncil Not silly - infuriating! I walk, cycle & use public transport. I now need to use an inhaler because I live in an LTN pollution dumping ground. Creating victims by shifting traffic from areas of high car ownership to roads where poorer people live is environmentally unjust.👇

@RossLydall Next thing we know, this govt (central & local) will claim that tube strikes r a great way to get ppl exercising - through walking & cycling. Does this justify wanting more tube strikes? That is how they justify the increased traffic & pollution that some cycling schemes fabricat

@feckitdotcom @NickMGodwin @theJeremyVine But public transport should take priority VS all other types; because unlike the bicycle, it could benefit the whole society & reduce car ownership whilst increasing air quality. @TFL needs new leadership and councils need to take back control of their infrastructure decisions✌🏽
