Baseball wedge issue. Is the fence there to mark where a ‘home run’ is, and the point of baseball is to cultivate/generate ‘home runs’ as much as possible? Or is the fence a necessary-evil because an infinite spatial quadrant (the platonic form of a baseball field) can’t be built in practice? And the point of baseball is for the batter to hit ‘em where they ain’t? And if a fielder *can* get there (fence or not) then the batter didn’t do that? A: It’s the latter.
Nate Schwartz@_nateschwartz

I will die on the hill if you end up on the other side of the wall with the ball, that should be a HR. you didn’t prevent the ball from clearing the fence

Had to kick someone of out of the gym. Happens a few times a year. This one was tough. I knew the guy, he’s 35, lonely, and looking for a place to connect with ppl. The gym I Is a great place for this! The problem… his emotional intelligence was a 0. He would yell Hello across the building. He wouldn’t leave you alone when you had headphones on. Asking staff on dates. Couldn’t really tell him anything bc he would always have a reason or excuse. These behaviors are fine, if you are my 6 yr old! But how does this type of person fit into society… I don’t know! As business owner I have a responsibility to protect the herd, maybe it’s my god complex. I had to protect the members before “creepy” turned bad.

@rhett_carlson @AFeinhandler @Build_Culture There is a very simple reason... because 100 years ago, the interior face of the brick wall got heated from the inside. When you start to insulate the brick wall from the interior, you now prevent that heat from reaching the interior face of the brick. Enter: problems.

@ChiSpectator I get where you're coming from, but your narrative isn't well supported by the data. Unless you're arguing that the rich progressive elites all live in Rogers Park??

The Chicago Spectator@ChiSpectator·
The city is very split between a small section of the city that is very white, very progressive (and politically engaged) and very wealthy, another small section that is a more politically moderate (now called MAGA by progressives) "middle class" mostly city workers and large sections of generally politically disengaged lower income citizens. That results in progressives consistently winning elections that have a 25% turnout. It's not hard to win when you just need 50.1% of 25% of all voters. At the end of the day, without compulsory voting, there is no fixing this. People in Chicago generally don't GAF. They've been conditioned that way after basically 40 years of the Daley Machine. They didn't need to be engaged. Things just got done without having to worry. That machine has been replaced by a small, relatively wealthy group of people who pretty much all live in that dark blue area. Yes, the map has changed since 2017, but the points stand.
Wilfred Reilly@wil_da_beast630

Fascinating map. Chicago used to be a city of lower-middle income Irish, Italian, Black, Slavic, etc neighborhoods. Following white flight, ADOS Black flight, and the last two Mayor's, it is now a Manhattan-level core of millionaires surrounded by hood and hipster slums. This, btw, is how you get "400" shooters - mostly minorities, sure - in one area of the city, and "two" in another.

I'm in the middle of a project with my kitchen backsplash using furniture- grade mahogany plywood (without an MDF core) to go with my sapele countertops. Paired with solid wood, ply can be warm, lovely & reduces expense. It's sound-absorbing as well; lauan/meranti truly is a cornerstone of Mid-century design.

Fact - if you can make things you need out of plywood, you’ll have nicer rooms than if you bought things at the store. Plywood beats plastic or particle board furniture from ikea every day. Don’t let me catch you disrespecting the ply.

@pasta_nachos yes, there is one argument. more housing supply will lead to lower housing prices. homeowners want to keep home prices high. counterargument to myself: lower property tax burdens raise property values.

There's 233,438.07 m² of empty or parking space in Uptown (ward 46). That could be homes for 10-15k new residents and $35-40M in yearly property tax revenue in a single ward alone

@ScottFarbman @rhett_carlson how would your wall assembly not be achievable by the above cmu build? presumably they will overlay the CMU with poly board and a brick veneer..

Growing up in Lincoln Park meant one of my first introductions to a bagel sandwich came at a spot where they steam the whole thing, the horror! Because of that I never cared much for bagel sandwiches but the ones at Zeitlin’s are pretty good. I’m fond of the sausage, egg, cheese.

With the 78 moving forward, and a billionaire planning to develop the rail yard on the other side of the river it’s time the address the real elephant in the South Loop. This fortress like quasi suburban development that bisects these tracts from the rest of the south loop.

@jmisci @SouthportCor From my understanding this is one of the most vibrant retail strips in Chicago. any vacancies are filled very quickly. family friendly and wide (enough) sidewalks help too.

Foot traffic is insane rn on @SouthportCor. Not a single empty storefront on this 8 block stretch. Tons of friendly faces! Great neighborhood design isn’t complicated: -dense mix of stores + housing -build near public transit. Don’t worry about providing parking -trees
