@timmckay52 Luckily, I just suffer from delusions of usefulness I got to this stage after giving up my delusions of adequacy which had replaced my delusions of grandeur I assume next will be an existential crisis ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Sometimes you read someone's first book and think, "Wow, dude, your ego as an author on social media is totally disproportionate to what you have out there." Then you read their sixth or seventh book and think, "Okay, nah, I get it. Brag away." I mean, maybe tone it down a little and remember where you came from, but still... Fair enough 😂 A friendly reminder that we're all growing. Don't beat down those who are following in your footsteps when you have the means to help them up.

@AuthorGoodwin Your ad by its design, just likely appeals more to an American audience … the really big advertisers on Facebook will often put out small scale, targeted ads using variations then just select the one that has the greatest resonance with their targets and go big

Every Meta ad I run performs better in the USA. I'm British so I'd expect my stuff to naturally appeal to fellow Brits. Do you think this cover is more likely to appeal to Americans? Or maybe they're more drawn to a lost heir/sword and sorcery book with a hint of sci-fi?

@hwjohnston7 @CatArthurian The music and film industry have spent hundreds of millions over decades and failed to even make a dent in … only thing that slowed it was inexpensive streaming subscription models, which those are going out the window now too as streamers keep hiking the prices

I really think authors globally need to band together and create some kind of anti-piracy program. We work hard to write books to entertain and inspire readers. To have our books taken and sold for triple their price is heartbreaking.

Can someone explain to me like I am 5 why people sign book contracts with publishers that have lile 100 followers on X? And I don't mean this in a bad way. I am genuinely confused.

@hwjohnston7 So minimal effort I get lots of people grabbing my books when I make them free … downside is there is no “sunk cost” fallacy quietly whispering that they need to “get their money’s worth” by reading it — so it can help with exposure which may lead to reviews but not a sure thing

I was told about this way you can dramatically improve your Amazon rankings. You make the book complete free. How effective is it? Does it earn more reviews for your books? #indie #publishing

@SweetNovember48 Makes total sense from the publishers business ops standpoint. They off loads the really resource intensive low ROI discovery to people who they only have to pay (indirectly) on delivery of something worthwhile (same reason agents increasingly act as first line editors)

@CLBroogle I've always wondered about that. I don't see many submissions to publishers. I've always focused on agents. Thanks for sharing that.

JK Rowling got 12 rejections. Stephen King got 30. Twelve? Thirty? I would genuinely throw a party for those numbers. Invite friends. Cater it. Make speeches 😂

I have my own domain that I keep active, but I don't have a website. It almost seems pointless with how social media is. I probably should make it but I am SO bad at that stuff that I wouldn't know how to even start. Do you maintain a website?

adding onto this: even if the cost is relatively cheap, be discerning. if a writer is offering editorial services & their sole claim to exp is having an agent or book deal, walk away. you can & will get the same for free from the writing community at large
Beth 💫 is querying@BMFwrites

The price gouging on some query review packages is InSaNe. $1k for a query, synopsis & 10 page review? In this economy?! Writers, plz research your options. Don't bury yourself in debt because someone has a strong following. There are so many FREE or cost-friendly options.

@Sophie_Bowns A key part is the nature of reader and audience discovery mechanics Only a small number of readers are exploratory — willing to read unknowns Everyone else select from known or social/para-social recommendations as a form of social proof which results in the Mathew effect
