@JillFilipovic We currently don’t even have a system that ensures public school students are actually learning — and in many places, they’re apparently not. Maybe let’s try to get that right first before trying to stifle alternative approaches?

Right, if homeschooling is actually super high quality, then homeschooling families should not object to being evaluated, tested, and checked-in-on to make sure their kids are actually learning.

Look, pro-homeschooling people are piling on this guy but he's not wrong at all. I know of families who are straight-up failing to teach their children beyond a 2nd-grade education. Like 16-year-old kids who don't know what the Capital of the US is, have never heard of Toronto, and could not perform a basic algebra problem. While it's true that there are many excellent homeschooling families whose instruction far exceeds that of any public school, the fact is that the American system of "school your kids however you want" does also yield a lot of severely stunted kids who get stuck playing "catch-up" for the rest of their lives. My wife was homeschooled, we might homeschool, I'm not averse to the practice per se, but it's a fact that there's a whole world of multi-generational homeschoolers who are not and will not rise above a 2nd or 3rd grade education level by their own volition. Should the state intervene in these cases? I dunno, the answer to the question is not as "easy" as many make it out to be. The idea of barely getting through 'Mary Had a Little Lamb' at the age of 16 should be appalling, and it IS happening in some American homeschooler families.

@jadler1969 If coffee shops couldn’t charge separately (“extra”) they would have to treat the cost as part of the price of a cup of coffee, subsidizing “plant milk” users but creating pressure to raise the price of a cup of coffee. This is how society gets “affordability” issues over time.

@yaledailynews Yale operates a ridiculous process in which even the elected trustees are effectively chosen by Yale’s administration. Of course they share all the same views as the Yale administration and faculty, and are completely ineffective as overseers.

@LynAldenContact I’m not sure whether pizza cognoscenti consider them “NY style” or their own category, but the best pizzas in the NY area are pizzas from coal-fired brick ovens in New Haven, CT. The second best place for pizza between Philly and Boston is Trenton, NJ. Philly area beats NYC.

The thing about Philly and South Jersey is that while we are known for cheesesteaks, we actually have some of the best pizza in the country. Plenty of Italian pros here. When I’m asked NYC or Chicago Pizza, my answer is Philly and South Jersey Pizza. I’ll go to bat for that.

What if: the credit contagion around private equity causes retail holders of high yield, below investment grade ETF bond funds, to liquidate. The ETF's are very liquid, the assets they hold are very illiquid. Ouch

It’s true some ETFs may hold an underlying portfolio consisting of assets that is different from what they track — typically when the ETF holds mostly cash equivalents and uses derivatives to track something different.
