Austin ISD is adding two days of instruction next year, bringing it to 171 days of annual instruction. But it's leaving money on the table because it's still shy of 175 instructional days. "Once AISD reaches the goal of 175 instructional days, the district would become eligible for supplemental funding under the Texas Education Agency's Additional Days School Year program." Phonics is the efficient route to becoming a proficient sight reader. Decoding takes place down a slower pathway in the brain. But while decoding is going on, new synaptic connections are being generated down a faster pathway. Once a word is decoded enough times, the fast path is activated and that word is instantly recognized. So, ironically, the efficient way to gaining a huge sight-word vocabulary is via decoding using the phonics content of the word, rather than via sight-word memorization.

The data questions the benefits of dual language instruction. Although Austin ISD students scored above state averages on most 2026 STAAR tests in 3rd-8th grades... Spanish speaking students fell further behind with third grade reading at 20% meeting grade level versus 28% statewide and even larger gaps in math. kut.org/education/2026…

I am growing increasingly worried that Austin city council may try to re-run prop Q ( Tax increase election ) this November Fuentes posted on the message board yesterday a strong message opposing nonprofit grant cuts. This brings them up to a majority that oppose nonprofit cuts. We know they also oppose staffing cuts. They aren't proposing any alternative. Without nonprofit or staff cuts, balancing the budget would be extremely complicated, and they won't be able to figure it out in the few budget meetings they have. I worry they are going to come out of the budget meeting and say the budget doesn't work & that the state left them no choice to run another prop Q
