A recipe for failure and spiritual delusion is to consider oneself a restorer of “Western” tradition, which is already a problematic label in itself, since Russia and even Greece, with nearly both feet in the East, are just as “Western” as any Western tradition that is already dead and of which we have only a few historical remnants. If you, as an Orthodox Christian, think you should first try to bring about a change in the external environment of the Orthodox setting you inhabit, rather than inwardly appropriating what is offered to you in order to transform your own mindset and conduct, you will soon find yourself in schism. The recovery of a lost “Western” tradition is a demonic inspiration. The birth and development of a new “Western” tradition is something that will be brought about by the Holy Spirit when the Orthodox of the “West” have fully and completely appropriated what those of the “East” have handed down to them, to the point that any and every “Western” adaptation will be as painful and laborious as pregnancy and childbirth, and for that very reason will bring forth something as precious and beloved in the eyes of the one who gave birth to it, both sharing the same flesh and the same blood.

That’s precisely why Aquinas developed the concept of analogia entis, to prevent his purely mental distinction from resulting in monism/pantheism. The problem is that, in doing so, he completely removed God from creation and turned union with God into a mere simulacrum based on created effects reflected in the soul. ☠️

@Postulliok @JohnXADX @YohannHoff Yes that’s correct. aquinas objectively is wrong. If it were true that the nature of the distinction between the energies was purely mental, so would the distinction between creatures, since, it is the different energies that gives a basis for different creatures.

Sabemos onde a graça está. Não nos compete definir onde ela não está. Não dá para tratar a soteriologia como um sistema lógico de deduções a priori sobre quem está ou não condenado, isso nem sequer tem cabimento considerando o amor livre de Deus por nós. A atitude que descobri que é a mais cristã de todas é confiar na misericórdia de Deus e desejar a salvação universal (porque Ele quer que todos sejam salvos). Essa resposta é teologicamente bem fundamentada (ela é uma conclusão necessária), mas pode soar como uma evasão das questões... Felizmente, o Supremo Juiz é Deus, e não eu (porque eu condenaria muita gente).

I believe in the real content behind the words, not in the words themselves, and I’ve already explained why. Sometimes a phrase conveys the intended meaning more accurately, and sometimes it doesn’t. Sometimes additions are necessary; sometimes entire sentences need to be removed. The Confession of Dositheus, for example, was revised and certain things were changed. By your logic, perhaps the Holy Spirit failed.... 😒 According to my logic, which seeks to extract the spiritual content the text is trying to convey, I have no problem with that. That’s why I can say that some councils, due to linguistic reasons, phrasing, the surrounding culture, the ideas in circulation, and prevailing theological trends, are clearer than others. For this reason, I trust some more than others when it comes to doctrinal exposition, without necessarily denying the validity of the rest. That’s why my faith is not placed in a piece of paper.

Ele refutou Aquino usando as distinções de Duns Escoto, mas rejeitando também o escotismo. Vocês literalmente nomeiam a essência dando atributos a ela, quando NENHUM santo oriental afirma essa bizarrice de que a essência é onipotente, onisciente, onipresente etc etc etc, no máximo você verá algum dizendo que ela é eterna ao tratar de Deus como um todo. São doutrinas fundamentalmente diferentes.

@Postulliok @YohannHoff Sobre os Capadócios: a palavra grega "Theotes" (Divindade) deriva da ação de ver/operar. Eles dizem que o NOME divindade se refere à operação, pois a essência em si é inominável. É uma questão linguística/epistemológica de como nomeamos Deus, não uma cisão ontológica Nele.

@Postulliok @YohannHoff O texto de São Máximo refuta os eunomianos, não o tomismo! Máximo diz que se os vários atributos definissem a essência, haveria várias essências. Aquino diz o mesmo: os atributos são distinções de RAZÃO na nossa mente; a essência de Deus permanece puramente simples e una.

Even St. Saint Philaret didn't deny the possibility of other sacraments. He affirmed that there are seven, and I'm not disagreeing with that. That said, I believe in the Holy Spirit, not in words (or phrasing). What a doctrine intends to convey can be correct and infallible, but the wording itself isn't necessarily so, it's shaped by the language, culture, and theological trends of its time. But if that's what you want to know: yes, I trust the early councils much more, and that doesn't mean I'm rejecting the later ones.

I'm not telling you to listen to me, I don't know where you got that from. Words and letters on a piece of paper still don't determine how the Holy Spirit acts, but you're free to treat your practice of faith as nothing more than a mental assent to a set of doctrinal propositions if you wish. I'm not stopping you. Just don't say that I'm going to burn in hell for eternity because I don't give certain opinions the same weight as the Nicene Creed. I won't.

I'm referring to the hierarchy of knowledge. Of course, scholastic knowledge (not to be confused with scholasticism) has its place within the faith. The point is: Dianoia (speculation, treatises, and syllogisms) is objectively inferior to supra-rational (noetic) knowledge. I'm speaking of direct divine insights obtained through a life of purification and nepsis. According to several saints, such as St. Nicodemus the Hagiorite, Adam did not even perceive things with ordinary colors or shapes. He contemplated only the inner, pre-existing principles of things and their indivisible unity. St. Gregory of Nyssa, in his work The Life of Moses, teaches about detaching from sensory and mental activity in order to enter into the divine darkness of unknowing. Monks teach that the true knowledge of reality (or theoria of beings) does not lie in what is seen or externally understood. True knowledge lies far beyond all of that. The Philokalia is full of these teachings! I will go further: all doctrines, including the infallible ones affirmed in the sacred councils, are absolutely inferior to this form of knowledge I am referring to, because this knowledge is not even cognitive. It is pre-cognitive and beyond cognition at the same time. That is what we should seek above all, not rationalism, not putting God in a box. One day, all books will burn in the light of Christ. All doctrines will be lived without the gap that exists between subject and object, between thought and experience. God will be known as we know Him, and the eye with which He sees us will be the same eye with which we see Him. If you doubt this, go and read St. Symeon.

Hieromartyr Nicholas (Stelletsky) on the necessity of knowledge of one’s own Orthodox faith: ‘Scholarly development, distinguished with respect to its material content by a religious and moral character, must be in the first place for every Christian. Not everyone, of course, can or needs to know much in the field of the divinely revealed doctrine of faith (1 Cor. 2:2; 3:2–3. Cf. 1 Cor. 2:16), but for none of the faithful is it characteristic to be ignorant in this field. If ignorance in other spheres of knowledge is only a deficiency, more or less important, then ignorance in the science of faith is a grievous sin, since for all without exception it is obligatory “to meditate on the law of the Lord day and night” (Ps. 1:2). There are people who excuse themselves in neglecting this most important duty by a fairly widespread opinion, as though the study of the matters of faith were unsafe: “Knowledge puffs up,” they say, following the apostle, “but love builds up”(1 Cor. 8:1). Of course, love is more important than any knowledge, but it does not yet follow from this that true knowledge is not a good. Without any knowledge of the Good, it is impossible to be morally good, and the relations between morality and knowledge are very close: knowledge, on the one hand, helps in the formation of basic moral concepts—spirituality, freedom, truth, justice, humaneness; on the other, it removes prejudices, ignorance, and the like. It is true: knowledge puffs up, but precisely superficial knowledge, of which Francis Bacon says that it removes one from God, whereas solid knowledge again brings one to Him.’ –Orthodox Moral Theology, Vol. 2, §43

I mean, of course we have the seven definitive and central sacraments, but there are certainly many others as well. After all, 'sacrament' means to make holy, to make sacred. I find it extremely dangerous to try to pin down certain things about God with absolute precision. It’s like trying to control the Holy Spirit by saying "you may only operate within this specific number, delimited by human minds that have rationalized God down to the smallest details." That’s why I don’t really care about some opinions, nothing will convince me that they stand on the same level as the Nicene Creed, lol. Trying to fit God into a box was the great mistake of the West. And yet there are latinizers who think we’re basically Roman Catholics without a pope, and who want to distort our faith.

🔸 Bright Saturday - The Holy Kollyvades Fathers 🍚🔸 On the Saturday of Bright Week, we commemorate the Holy Fathers of the so-called “Kollyvades” movement. These monastics, primarily from Mount Athos, taught adherence to traditional Orthodox practices amid waves of westernization and secularism during the years of the Turkish occupation of Greece. In the mid-18th century, a debate arose on the Holy Mountain concerning memorial services for the departed, the frequency of Holy Communion, and other matters relating to the exact rules for observances within the Church. The “Kollyvades” Fathers adhered to strict Orthodox tradition, and were opposed to unwarranted innovations regarding these matters. The starting-point for this controversy was the building of the Kyriakon at the Skete of Saint Anna in 1754. Debate arose as to whether the commemoration of the founders and benefactors should be held on Saturday or Sunday, and with what frequency the monks should receive Holy Communion. In accordance with longstanding Orthodox tradition, the Kollyvades insisted that memorial services should not be performed on Sundays, the day of the Lord’s Resurrection, but on Saturday, the traditional day for commemoration of the dead, since Christ lay in the tomb on Saturday. These Fathers were mockingly dubbed ‘kollyvades’ after the kollyva (the sweetened boiled wheat served at memorial services). The Kollyvades movement - led by Saints Makarios Notaras, Nikodemos the Hagiorite and Athanasios of Paros - strove for a rediscovery of Patristic theology and a liturgical life that included frequent communion, and a return to the precepts preached by the Hesychasts of the 14th century. Thus, the name of ‘kollyvas’ became a title of honor, and the movement was responsible for a beneficial regeneration of Orthodox tradition. The movement came under assault by many at Mount Athos and elsewhere. In 1776, Fr Athanasios of Paros was even condemned as a heretic, defrocked, and excommunicated by Patriarch Sophronius II. In 1981, Patriarch Gabriel IV and the Holy Synod found the charges against Athanasius absurd and unfounded, and so he was restored to his priestly rank.
