@Jo_Marney @Matt_VickersMP Sorry you were referring to what happened in the past, and now you are changing the argument. Odd that, its like you don't do research. If you think detention is suitable place to raise children, then you are lost and would be better off in Belarus.

Times have changed significantly. The boat people are not refugees and what is going on now is tantamount to an invasion. Not sure why you think women and children should be treated any differently to the men either. This isn’t Victorian times and secure units are not prisons - they are secure units. Might also add that there’s nothing to stop them from leaving and going home - which would be best for everyone including the children who should never have been forced to come here by their economic migrant parents.

We will introduce the toughest reforms to Britain’s border laws. 🔴 A total ban on asylum claims for all new illegal arrivals. 🔴 Leave the ECHR. 🔴 Deport new illegal migrants within a week, and all foreign criminals. A proper plan - not written on the back of a fag packet.

@Jacob_Rees_Mogg On the Euro, all new EU member states are required to adopt the euro eventually, but, as demonstrated by Sweden, even when they meet the criteria there is no pressure to join. You can actually manage your economy to keep (just) missing the criteria (see Poland)

@Jacob_Rees_Mogg @PJA1066 It also means finding around £20 billion (minimum) for membership of this corrupt failing organisation. In addition any free trade deals we have signed since leaving would end. Out means out!

@russm1961 @john4brexit So the agreement with the EU is primarily focussed in tree key areas, which have been identified because business has highlighted concerns. In particular SPS rules which seriously hamper the agri-food sectors.

@RespondUnable @john4brexit I disagree, EU regs often go too far and there is no need for the vast majority of companies that don’t trade with the EU to increase costs unnecessarily…also in some instances UK standards are better but the UK doesn’t force the EU into subordination to comply.

Low growth EU is trying to shake the U.K. when we should be innovating and diverging- the way to get growth. The PMs surrender to save his skin will severely cost the 92% of businesses who do not export to the EU and drag us into managed decline. This is insanity from a desperate man.
Elisa Mosini 🇪🇺🇮🇹@MosiniElisa

Wonderful news! The UK is moving toward fast-tracking EU regulations into British law, in order to align with the EU single market in key sectors. This is a major step toward rebuilding closer ties and stronger alignment between the UK and the EU. Europe is reconnecting 🇪🇺🇬🇧

@Jo_Marney @Matt_VickersMP Which comparable countries lock up all their asylum seekers in secure accommodation (including all women and children) - which is also something we never did. Even in the 1990s, UK detention was selective and only for a minority of claimants. Before that it was less restrictive

They shouldn’t be in accommodation centres either. They should be in secure detention units, as is wha happens to people who arrive in countries illegally all over the world. They should then be processed asap and returned. They should not be free to walk around British streets at all and should be receiving no allowances, taxis and travel, trips to leisure centres or anything else. They should be housed in secure units as they always used to be and provided with basic food and medical care within the unit whilst they’re processed and returned. Labour won’t do this and neither will the Tories which is why we are now in this unprecedented political climate. People have had enough of it all.

@sucha_rascal @zatzi OK nowhere on the referendum paper did it say Brexit means leaving the Single Market or the Customs Union (as there are non-EU States in both). That aside nothing the Government is doing places us in the single market nor the customs union. So what is your point.

@zatzi So treacherous Starmer is now cancelling Brexit. Labour’s 2024 general election manifesto has explicitly pledged to keep the UK outside of the European Union It also rules out a return to the European single market and customs union or a reintroduction for freedom of movement.

@JuliaHB1 @BecklesCake92 What proportion of children who will receive this benefit come from households earning in excess £1m. What would be the administrative cost of means testing such a benefit? Answer these questions, and then we an have a reasonable debate. Relying on outliers, poor argument.

Yes, if that apple could have been paid for by that kid's own parents which, in the majority of homes, it could be. These are not breakfast clubs for kids from means-tested low income families. A millionaire's kid gets "free" breakfast too. That's a terrible waste of taxpayers' money that could be better spent on genuinely needy children.

The breakfasts are not free. They are paid for by taxes - mostly on parents who feed their own kids. Most of these 10,000 children would have had a perfectly healthy breakfast at home without these clubs. This isn't about helping the poorest kids, it's the state taking over the basic job of parenting.
Angela Rayner@AngelaRayner

My pleasure to welcome @Keir_Starmer @AndyBurnhamGM and @bphillipsonMP to Holy Trinity primary school in Ashton this morning. 33 new free breakfast clubs will open across Greater Manchester this week, giving 10,000 more children a free, healthy start to the school day. That’s Labour on your side. 🌹

@JuliaHB1 I am very happy that, as a higher rate tax payer, my taxes are going towards supporting children of the 76% of breakfast club parents who need these facilities in order to work to support their children due to the abhorrent inequality of wealth in this country.

@Jo_Marney @Matt_VickersMP Wow, thanks for outlining the Government's policy to me. That is why they are moving towards accommodation centres rather than hotels etc. However, they had to wait for the break clause in the 10 year! contracts negotiated by the last Government (Jenrick et al).

The point is that they are not removed. The other point is that we should be putting them into secure detention units. Not in hotels. Not in communities. There should be no paying for taxis, no allowances and certainly no hotels. I would be all up for spending some money opening detention centres, preferably floating ones.

@russm1961 @john4brexit The paper work is a result of differing standards between the EU and the UK created by Brexit. The solution is to harmonise those standards. Those that don't trade with the EU will be largely unaffected (I am not sure why you are keen on lower food standards?)

@QdenisT @goodfoodgal So, considering the EU is largely a free market capitalist trading block, with a federal structure, based legal protection of human rights - which bit is "Communist Totalitarianism" - I mean I have read Marx, Engles etc Which economic or political theorist are you using?

The pursuit of Net Zero is utterly idiotic. Ed Miliband is driving an agenda that is hollowing out British industry, weakening the economy, and pushing up the cost of living - all in the name of ideology. We still need to produce goods. We still need energy. But instead of doing so here, we are exporting production overseas - to countries with higher emissions - and then importing it back at greater cost. So emissions rise, industry leaves, and Britain pays the price. That is not serious policy. It is self-inflicted decline.

@Dekka_44 @RealDonKeith In the last general election, over 50% of votes cast were for parties that explicitly stated closer ties with the EU were their aim. Democracy enough for you. As nobody knew what Brexit was (an outcome wasn't on the ballot paper) you have no idea what it meant.

It's treason through and through. Going against a democratic vote because they didn't like the out come. It's an absolute disgrace. Let's face it since we ended up in the EU any idea of leadership was outsourced to an unelected organisation. Elected governments have been told what to do and say by the European union. Leadership in this nation went into rapid decline. Now because they don't know what to do they are trying to take us back into the EU. We tried to cut the apron strings with a democratic vote on a referendum. Brexit was never implemented properly and had allowed the shit show we are now currently facing to continue. Yet this corrupt globalist, commie, dictatorship wants us to board a sinking ship. FUCK THAT SHIT RIGHT THE FUCK OFF.

Kemi Badenoch has cleared the air — and it’s very simple. She never called for British involvement in direct attacks on Iran. She said give verbal support to our allies, and if British bases are being attacked, then action must be taken to defend them. That’s not escalation — that’s basic national defence. 🇬🇧

Who are these children and why can't their parents afford to feed them? If those same children are in after school clubs too, which sometimes provide cheap crap food alongside cheap crap care, when are these parents spending time with their small children? What is the wider implication for our children? Why should we be encouraging families to spend very little time together?
