@David__Osland And where would UK society be without pensioners’ free labour? In even direr straits. A survey by Centre for Economic and Business Research in 2022 found that over 65s contribute £48 Billion to the economy in unpaid services, £33B in volunteering and £15B in informal care.

Britain has the least generous state pension in the G7 and the highest rate of pensioner poverty in western Europe. And all I'm reading in the rightwing press is 'scrap the triple lock'.

@LiamMcIlvanney @BBGband Pure dead brilliant. Puts me in mind of the wonderful “Lament for a Lost Dinner Ticket” by Margaret Hamilton.

@ScotRoadArchive @UndisScot Is that a Mini Clubman I see? As kids we’d be put in the boot of that to go on short trips - the original 7 seater 😆

We're continuing our #carspotting and #ferryspotting series with this April 1972 pic. The location is a bit obvious in this one, so no points for confirming it 😂 But you can gain our admiration by identifying the cars pictured! Also: what replaced this connection? #archives

A view of the Scottish Canals maintenance squad assessing damage to the Kelpies in Falkirk. Apparently one of the team had accidentally used the wrong dilution of cleaning solution on Baron’s teeth, resulting in this unfortunate ‘just back from a holiday in Turkey’ look.

@Overourwall @dharley508 @JayneMoobs Well blow me down, The Crossing did not win with 55% of the vote. I’m shocked I tell you, shocked! I’ve finished how I started, pretty much out of step with the majority. Just as well it was great fun taking part and pondering the relative merits of so many great albums. Thanks!

@arealmofwonder Hmm are we sure about the pronounciation of Machair? I’ve always said it with a harsh “ch” as in “loch”. Anyway, it my favourite. I’d head for The Machars (another spelling) in Galloway Lickety split.

@CarlBovisNature Yes possibly on cliffs in Orkney, but I was so terrified of the heights that I’m not 100% sure it was a puffin! I need a better head for heights and better binoculars!

This is one of my favourite things. My youngest called the original Glasgow Museum of Transport “The Porteesium” and that’s what we call it to this day. And I still maintain the old Kelvin Hall museum was more fun than the new one. We loved it.

Admit it: Your kid mispronounced a word three years ago and now the whole family says it that way. What's the word in your house? (We still say 'pasketti' and I’m not stopping anytime soon.)

'Still life.' (1937) One of Giorgio Morandi's friends, the writer Dino Campana, wrote in one of his short stories: 'the surest way to amaze ourselves is to stare fixedly at a given object. At one point, it will seem to us, miraculously, that we are seeing it for the first time.'

@ScotRoadArchive @UndisScot My 90 year old neighbour recalls her late husband’s insistence they drive through the west bore on the first day it opened as it was such a significant development. She was rather non plussed by their drive to the nearest roundabout on the other side to turn and come back again!

#OnThisDay in 1964, the east bore of the Clyde Tunnel was opened to traffic. The west bore had been in operation since the previous July. This photo shows works nearing completion. The tunnel was built by contractor Charles Brand & Son. #archives #glasgow
