The language of Trumps post here is very important. He could have accepted a trade deal with Vietnam immediately and “declare victory”. But he didn’t and instead said he was “looking forward to a meeting in the near future”. He has wanted tariffs for 40 years. Why would he take them off the table a few days after finally getting his way? He wants to keep these conditions on the field, see what happens and build leverage. I interpret this that he will take his time to do deals. This will also have a side benefit. It will force foreign buyers to show up for our upcoming Treasury auctions. Why? Because if a foreign CB abandons the auctions, you can reasonably expect that Trump will put that country at the back of the line to resolve tariffs.

I feel pretty connected in the world. I can get to most people directly or in one hop. But I couldn’t get “hundreds of investors, tech CEOs, supply chain experts around the world” to speak to me last week even if I had wanted to. Separately, if you interpret “hundreds” as ~300, and you’d want to talk thoughtfully to them you’d need to be doing it 24h per day for the week. Is this what he actually did?? This isn’t to opine on the takeaways. But when people write missives like this that start in hyperbolic bullshit, I tend to think this is more cope than fact - iow, YMMV. I am more firmly in the: “we don’t know what will happen next but there is a method to all this and, while it’s early days, the quantitative market feedback to that method is that it’s working.”
