According to the WSJ, Bank of Kunlun received protection payments from shipping companies in exchange for safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz and guarantees that Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps won’t target their vessels. This is the same Bank of Kunlun that the U.S. Treasury sanctioned in 2012 for facilitating significant transactions for Iranian banks designated by the United States. Some of these protection payments are also reportedly being made in cryptocurrency. In the past, Iran has used USDT/Tether (backed by U.S. government securities) to launder money and evade sanctions. The U.S. Treasury should use every available tool to stop Chinese banks and crypto currency companies from facilitating the extortion of global shipping and energy routes. This is another dimension of the China challenge playing out in the Middle East. Beijing is indirectly threatening energy lifelines of U.S. allies in Asia.

Non-residents who spend millions of dollars on NYC apartments help drive NYC’s economy. Most of the profit in condominium development is in the penthouses. The Ken Griffins of the world make NYC high end development viable, driving high-paying construction, brokerage, legal, marketing, and other jobs in NYC. We should be applauding Ken for spending $238 million in NYC, not attacking him for doing so. Importantly, non-resident owners of NYC apartments who leave their apartments vacant for much of the year are not a burden to NYC schools, services, or other resources while they drive growth in retail sales, restaurants, theater, and other important drivers of our economy. They also often support NYC non-profits with donations. Ken’s company is a major employer in NYC of very high paying jobs which drive a considerable amount of our tax base. We wouldn’t want him to move even more employees to Miami. These non-resident owners also already pay a lot of taxes including mansion taxes, real estate taxes, sales taxes and more. While @NYCMayor Mamdani likes the tag line ‘Tax the rich.’ Unfortunately, his policies will harm the constituencies he is supposedly trying to help. I can’t imagine the NYC construction unions are excited about his plan.

I have to admit, I was wrong. I wasn’t expecting the market to recover this fast, especially with the war still ongoing. I thought the market would either 1) stay low for a while or 2) drop a bit further. Called the BTC top at 126K, the ZEC short at the exact top to the penny, and bought oil right before the war started, among other things. It’s all public. But here we are. One wrong prediction. For those wondering, I never shorted the market. I didn’t lose money. In fact, I made money on the recovery because I bought a decent position in MSFT under its 200 WMA, and I’m very happy I did. Your goal should always be to be positioned for both scenarios so you can benefit in either direction. Keep enough cash, or cash equivalents earning yield, so that if the market drops, you can buy low. And keep enough positions to also profit on the way up. Not to brag, but with my size, capital protection is and always will be the number one priority. I understand that if your portfolio is just a few thousand bucks, we probably have different views, and that’s perfectly fine.​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​ I sold the S&P near 7,000, I publicly bought oil companies and sold for a 20% profit, and I bought MSFT near the bottom.
