I've been spending the last few weeks doing a lot of research on what's the best retro laptop for DOS gaming. I came to the realization that this beast doesn't exist. Here's my notes on what will make the best machine: - CPU: Pentium MMX/AMD K6: The only CPUs that are not multiplier locked and support the setmul utility to give you granular control on CPU speed to play games from the 80's to the late 90's - Screen: TFT 640x480 for 1:1 DOS pixel scaling - GPU: If you have a 480p LCD, it doesn't matter. But if you get an 800x600 or 1024x768 LCD, then the GPU is critical. Some are able to scale the DOS image to FS (Chips & Tech, ATI) some FS horizontally (S3) and some are just plain horrible (Cirrus Logic, Trident) with huge black bars around the game - Audio: True OPL3 is critical. Stereo speakers a must. Wavetable is nice to have. - Bonus points: Gameport (for Joystick), caddy less HDD (for easier CF/SD upgrades), NiMH batteries (for pack rebuild) - Things to look out for: brittle/cracked plastic, proprietary RAM upgrades, leaked clock batteries, spent backlight/dim image. @RetroTechChris did I miss anything?

@iequalshane Yeah sky kills the nostalgic vibe, but I get why they did it back in the day — had to show the “upgrade”/16-bit power and didn’t fully comprehend the nostalgia/iconic nature.

As a kid, I remember really disliking the look of Super Mario All-Stars the first time I saw it on a friend's SNES and I think I know why. It has way too much visual noise, especially with the backgrounds. The sky gradient also didn't match the style well.

I’ve got a giveaway of 1992 Pinnacle running right now. 92 was wild because they were still figuring out inserts. While there are some inserts, the jumbo packs I got my set from had Team 2000 in them, there are really cool subsets which would be inserts in modern sets. Like ⬇️

@2024dion Spent most of my life in MI -- always joke that I've moved to FL and CA after leaving home, but still moved back to MI. I think most people are just scared off by the "cold". I can't really imagine living anywhere else, specifically on a permanent basis.

Why is Michigan such an unattractive place to move? It's one of the most beautiful states, has one massive metro area and 2-3 booming smaller metros, a diversified economy, extremely affordable housing, a top tier flagship university, etc

@sdmat123 @th3betterself @iScienceLuvr Knowing Jensen can be an “Only The Paranoid Survive” type, I think he knows Nvidia pulls off the innovation that most can’t, but doesn’t want to make the assumption that China can’t get close enough on their own. He’s not gonna get complacent anytime soon.

He asked some good questions and followups that definitely caught Jensen out in pushing contradictory ideas. Copying what I wrote elsewhere on that: Is Nvidia's advantage that customers can easily build by themselves, or that Nvidia does the esoteric and super hard performance work for them? If Nvidia provides overwhelmingly better performance and tco why the new emhasis on customer financing / investment? If it's so difficult to optimize models for multiple hardware platforms why do you see a mix of deployment hardware at all the major customers? But while Jensen might have been a little uncomfortable with his difficulty in perfectly maintaining a narrative it was Dwarkesh unprofessionally repeatedly pushing the Anthropic party line even after Jensen explicitly disagreed with the premises that really annoyed him.

I know I'm late to this but listening to the Dwarkesh-Jensen Huang interview and it's wild. Jensen is typically such a composed and calm person, I've never seen Jensen so annoyed before, it's kinda frightening lol
