I need examples of a US city with at least three pro sports teams where the NHL team is top two in fandom in the city. Boys here said Detroit, DC and Tampa. I think I’ll give them DC and Tampa, but contest Detroit. Some guys said Minnesota, I think Twins are bigger than Wild.

@A1012080 @schwartzsteins @BFW The empty ballpark when I go to the club seats that my father in law owns would determine that I am telling the truth. No one cares about the pirates. Most of the crowd is out of town business people on work trips and not even real fans.

Nothing creates more interest in the NFL than trades. This is why Cleveland’s proposal to allow teams to trade picks up to 5 years out as opposed to 3 years out makes so much sense. More picks to trade = more trades = more interest & team building options.

If it seems like there have been more trades than ever, there have been. Since the 2026 new league year started last week, there have been 18 trades, including Andy Dalton today. From the day the 2025 new league year started until the NFL Draft, there were 15 trades. One week of the league year this year already has produced three more trades than there were over weeks last year.

Chuck using football analogies for me to understand this Duke Siena game is great. It reminds me of his texts with @tejfbanalytics

Ya I wish it was that simple but I feel like a ton of the long time to throw plays are missed first reads. I think the key to the game is realizing only 1 player catches a ball on a pass play (not enough downfield laterals) and your is to get that player open. Right now it’s getting a D in base defense to play less unique coverages. Problem is if you get down too much in a game teams Won’t buy the “commitment to the run” . So like the origin of the Air Raid you make your base identity 2 minute drill style football and you don’t have to worry about coming back. Like the Rams for example, best offense. Best 1st down, 2nd down, one of the worst 3rd down. Because the under center football doesn’t work as well against 3rd down defense when they know it’s a pass. So the best offense is often contigent on a good defense and now we are at the end of the dunning Kruger curve where the best way to win is having good offense and good defense and be good at everything which teaches us nothing hahah. Lots of work for me to do this offseason!

@schwartzsteins @SharpFootball I wonder how analogus it is to hitting in baseball: swing for rbt fences even if that means more strikeouts :: hold onto the ball because deep passing plays are worth it.

@threesandtds24 Left out the number tho, 26th. I actually like some of his game, dislike his snap count but they put a lot on his shoulders to get the right play.

@schwartzsteins I was about to ask if you could pull up where Bryce was on the list of unhealthy pockets but you were already on it!!

you right. Included TTT here because it's a good proxy to let you know how often a QB is getting to their in rhythm throws vs quick game. Look at Mahomes and Rodgers vs McCarthy and Sanders. The former makes their decision pre-snap, not letting the pocket have a chance to get unhealthy. The latter group needs to make a decision!

Where your QB Bryce Young ranks in unhealthy pockets. How I would use this data to help him is letting him know to get rid of the ball before it gets bad, instead of trying to make a play like college. Of the QBs I have studied this offseason he does some of the most pre-snap adjustments or "Check with Me" (choosing between 3 plays at LOS). Take that pre-snap approach to the post snap. It's what Stafford does so well

Exactly. From a league perspective it lets GMs convince owners to let them mortgage the future for the GMs personal plan. Its why its ok for what we have now but the league needs to protect owners. Its why the league has the 3 year removed from high school minimum for drafting players. its not "right" but its protection.

@schwartzsteins Also when it doesn’t work out, the gm doesn’t care anymore because they’re probably fired. The next gm comes in with the deck stacked against them

@schwartzsteins sorry, I see now (with my glasses on) that you were not saying spending on players goes up overall (which is my going theory). that’s my bad

@MichaelGailee This is in a world where you have the ability to trade picks!! People will make trades, it’s not that extra assets make them more likely to trade.

@schwartzsteins Banning pick trades essentially nullifies trades in general, as you rarely see trades that do not include picks, especially not for top players. This means free agency becomes even more important, and free agency is even more inequitable than trades, decreasing parity.

@MichaelGailee It does tho and I showed you that the nets have been terrible outside of 1 year. Making the playoffs in the east means next to nothing Now we have the OKC Thunder who took advantage of teams willingness to trade future picks

@schwartzsteins I’m not gonna argue with you about what’s better for your league, but you used an NBA analogy to make your point, and I don’t think your ideas on pick trades apply well to the NBA. Sorry.

No. There are way more incompetent teams that mortgage than the middle teams. I’m saying from the league perspective you want to create parity and these teams that go all in, or now will over spend on players with new assets. The level of player being traded isn’t changing, the price is only increasing

@schwartzsteins If you want “hopeless” look at the Bulls. They spent a decade in limbo because they weren’t willing to cash in players for picks to rebuild, or cash in picks for players to try to contend. They settled for the middle. If you remove trading picks, you get more teams like this.

@schwartzsteins They were contenders just a couple years ago lmao. They'll have a high pick in a great draft, a few promising young players, a coach that is widely respected by NBA analysts, and a treasure trove of picks to come. Tell me why fans shouldn't be hopeful.

@MichaelGailee Some teams even when they get the picks fail and some teams, with great orgs like the Celtics, do well. But the nets are atrocious, 2 times over on trading the farm for players. Fans have no hope.

@schwartzsteins Completely disagree. Celtics aren't good because of the KG trade. The Celtics are good because they've had over a decade of some of the best management in sports, KG trade being a part of that. Trading picks isn't the problem, bad management is.
