The Strait of Hormuz closing cut off the flow of fertilizer from the Gulf to the world. Military strikes also halted movement of LNG feedstock, which powers fertilizer manufacturing. The two events compound each other’s effect on the global food supply. wsj.com/opinion/the-ir…

Statement issued moments ago by the IRGC spokesperson: In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. The strategic power you boasted about has turned into a strategic defeat. The world's superpower claimant, if it could have escaped the predicament, it would have done so by now. Do not call your defeat an agreement. The era of your promises is over. Today in the world, there are two fronts: truth and falsehood. And every free truth-seeker is not seduced by your media waves. Have your internal conflicts reached the stage of negotiating with yourselves? Neither will your investments in the region materialize, nor will you see the previous prices of energy and oil, until you understand: stability in the region is guaranteed by the powerful hand of our armed forces. Stability comes through power. We explicitly declare: Until our will prevails, no situation will return to the previous state; this will occurs when the thought of action against the Iranian nation is completely erased from your filthy minds. Our first and last word from day one has been, is, and will be: No one like us will come to terms with anyone like you. Not now, and never. And victory is only from God, the Almighty, the Wise. #oott #iran

China is building out its power grid at an unprecedented pace: China's two largest power grid firms issued a record $131 billion of bonds in 2025. This has more than DOUBLED since 2024, posting the 2nd consecutive annual increase. State Grid alone issued $110 billion, almost TRIPLING the previous year's total. So far in 2026, State Grid and China Southern Power Grid have raised another $13.5 billion in bond sales. The State Grid network covers over 80% of the country and supplies electricity to more than 1 billion people. China is all-in on energy expansion.

Two major risks for the Gulf states if they join the campaign (as opposed to just telling the US to continue and ‘finish the job’): - unhinged Iranian retaliation; - one or more Gulf states go in and then the US pulls out, leaving them in the cold.

Another way to see it: White: Brent curve now. Blue: 1 month ago. Sep-26 is up $30/bbl, >50% (red arrow). That’s not “well anchored”. That’s a curve shifting AGGRESSIVELY higher. And no, backwardation doesn’t mean “cheap oil later”. The curve carries little Bayesian signal, it’s an incentive mechanism to pull storage barrels into the market now (as it does NOT pay to buy and store now and sell later).

Alexander Stahel 🌻@BurggrabenH

Remember when Bessent said “the curve is still well anchored”, implying the futures curve suggests lower oil prices soon? That’s wrong on both counts. He misreads backwardation, which is supposed to pull barrels out of storage fast, and ignores the curve move itself. For instance, Sep contract in Brent is up $30/bbl since 7 Jan 2026, over 50%. That is not an "anchored" curve.

According to The Atlantic, citing three people with knowledge on the matter, following White House Special Envoy Steve Witkoff's communications with Iranian decision-makers through Pakistani intermediaries, a 15-point plan, based on the same one presented to Iran last year, was presented for them to concede to if they want to forestall further strikes. @sentdefender

@citrinowicz @AndurandPierre No only will they enter with strength, they have a 8000 year history of negotiating as well as higher credibility than W&K. Iran has time on their side, time is leverage in a long term negotiations.

Paradoxically, if talks do happen, Iran will enter them from a position of strength, perhaps stronger than ever. It holds leverage over the Strait of Hormuz and understands that a war of attrition doesn’t serve the U.S., whose president is looking for an exit and has limited good options. Iran does endless was, but it will not give up on shaping conditions that lead to a strategically improved reality from its perspective because, in its view, it has already won by not conceding. Even if Trump shifts course what are the alternatives? A risky ground campaign, or expanded strikes on infrastructure that could destabilize the Gulf and send oil prices soaring? If negotiations do materialize, we may see a familiar pattern: a framework deal that allows Trump to claim progress, while leaving Israel and Gulf states facing a more resilient Iran, economically strained but strategically emboldened, ideologically hardened, and determined to rebuild its capabilities. At this point, the outlook offers little reason for optimism, especially given the unresolved nuclear stockpile issue. This conflict hasn’t turned Iran into Venezuela. If anything, it’s pushing it closer to a smaller-scale version of North Korea and that’s a trajectory with serious long-term implications. #IranWar

It’s still unlikely that there is any meaningful deal to be had. For the moment, all news about indirect or direct diplomacy should instead be seen through the lens of attempts by both sides and 3rd parties to phase-in a potential ceasefire and what it could look like…
