1/8 Nod (@nizzaneela) has updated his paper demolishing Pekar et al's claim of 'two introductions'. v3 is more accessible, same brutal conclusion: the supposed support for two spillovers is an artefact of rigged hypothesis testing. arxiv.org/html/2502.2007…

@HPluckrose @threadreaderapp unroll. Pluckrose so beautifully understands and captures the difference between tolerance (which can be granted) and respect (which must be earned).

If I was ever to be convinced of that, the thing I would most want to ban is religion. But I am not convinced of that. I think it is wrong to deny other people's freedom of belief & that it also wouldn't work. The end.

I never advocate compromise. I advocate leaving people alone to believe, speak, live as they see fit provided this does no material harm to anyone else nor denies them the same freedom. When it does, we say no. 1/

@msediewyatt I've gone round and round with Helen Pluckrose about it. She just deflects and pretends not understand my point. I've followed her for years and often like her moderate takes. But "trans" is just different. Compromise just isn't warranted. Men aren't women. End of.

@ej_spode @BrandonWarmke I wish that were true, but I’m pretty sure self-deception is stronger. Norman Zinberg, one of my professors during my psych residency, always said, “Never underestimate the capacity for self-deception.”

@BrandonWarmke I think they will know exactly what they were thinking, which is that they preferred to be careerists rather than philosophers.

Sometimes I wonder if those philosophers who got a reputation in the 90s for being careful metaphysicians and then jumped on professional fads and started writing papers like "Gender as a Self-Conferred Identity" will one day look back and ask what they were thinking.

@EbonyJHilton_MD You really don't know that legally-sold e-cigs are safer than cigarettes? And you think young vapers are more at risk than elderly smokers? Can you define "harm reduction?" Data please.

Vaping was sold to us as the “safer” alternative. But the data tells a different story. Lung damage. Heart disease. Nicotine addiction. And our young people are the most at risk. Get the facts on Second Opinion w/ Dr. Ebony Jade Hilton on the #BlackStarNetwork Thursdays, 11AM EST
rolandsmartin@rolandsmartin

Dr. Ebony Hilton breaks down what vaping actually is, its damaging effects on young bodies, how to spot signs of use, and the reasons it's so appealing. Knowledge is power when protecting our youth. youtube.com/live/J2Z4jvBbN… #SecondOpinion #BlackStarNetwork #vapingawareness

Just as most Muslims are not Islamists, most Christians are not Christianists. But Trump's and Hegseth's Christianity is looking more and more like a funhouse mirror version of Islamism. Sad. thehill.com/policy/defense…

@aaronecarroll In a highly distrustful atmosphere, earning JUSTIFIED trust in experts should start with: • acknowledgment of experts' portion of the blame for the distrust, • followed by a fervent apology. And THEN work on "truth, context, and care." psandman.com/media/Corona79…

1/ I’ve been thinking a lot about how we communicate health data and research shapes public trust & the ways oversimplification is leading to growing mistrust in science. A thread 👇️

@JenniferSey Rewriting Strangio's post: "If you are angry or think it's 'unfair' for a trans-identifying boy to beat an actual girl...then fundamentally you don't think trans-identifying boys are 'real' girls. It's that simple." It IS that simple: trans-identifying boys are NOT real girls.

In the narrow lexicon of anti-tobacco activism, there is no word I loathe more than "addict". A myriad of equally satisfying substitutes are available. Thank you. That is all.

@RushmoreExt23 @X Although it's not actually the government doing this, it's still repulsive repression. Does X do this to any prominent anti-THR sources, or only prominent THR sources? My country: I still wear my flag pin, but there are distressing days when I feel like turning it upside down.

🧵Alot of people are having a good laugh right now at the antics at the convention of Canada's New Democratic Party (the NDP). I particular, this woman, who has chaired the convention. Her name is Adrienne Smith, and while the clips may be funny, there is nothing funny about her agenda or the influence she wields. 1/9

A question for everyone: survey data suggests that by the end of the Covid-19 emergency trust in public health institutions had decreased significantly. If you are among the people who reacted that way, why specifically? I'm hoping for long, diverse, individualized answers.

Is the AMA Telling the Truth About Their Expressed Positions on Youth Gender Surgeries? The American Medical Association to the @StrackHaley at the National Review @NRO on Feb. 3: "[T]he AMA agrees with ASPS that surgical interventions in minors should be generally deferred to adulthood." The @AmerMedicalAssn today: "We responded" to questions about the American Society of Plastic Surgeon's opposition to pediatric gender-transition surgeries "only after being contacted by media outlets, using the language approved by the board. While some media coverage characterized this as agreement with the ASPS statement, that phrasing did not come from the AMA."
Leor Sapir@LeorSapir

The American Medical Association has just clarified that it does NOT, in fact, endorse the American Society of Plastic Surgeons’ statement on gender surgery. AMA says that its statements to the press were misinterpreted, and that its support for hormones/surgeries remains unchanged.
