i don't know how much of a larger trend this is, but anecdotally i feel like starting with Hillary Clinton the center left candidates in the Democratic Party have engaged in a series of short term plays where they try to beat challengers to their left by outlefting them, over and over, without much thought put into what does over the long run to the party as a whole

I think the path forward is to recognize that the battle was already lost some time in the 2016-2021 period, become less invested in propping up an "establishment" that no longer knows how to stand up for old-fashioned common sense values, and work on building the next thing.

We have three sports leagues in the US that each make far more revenue than any soccer league anywhere in the world. We have dozens of stadiums that are far beyond the best venue in most countries. Sports as entertainment is something we unquestionably do better than anyone else in the world. So when US sports consumers give feedback, you would think people would listen, right? It's like French people commenting on your food or Germans talking about your engineering quality. Nope! Just more Euro-snob bullshit. The bottom line is soccer is a worse product than American football or basketball. That's why we don't watch it. We have options.

The infinite discourse comes back so it's time to remind people that if you change how offsides are decided, you are simply making another arbitrary limit up, and when the player will be 0.1mm away from that limit, you will also say "this is stupid!!!" Just accept the rule lol

Whats strange about soccer: It employs absurd mathematical precision to police offsides, a rule that mostly matters in spirit rather than in strict application. (You just don't want cherrypicking) But its extremely casual about timekeeping, whose literal application matters a ton

rent control is pretty empirically not great policy but if you refuse to try to understand why it’s appealing to people and keep sneering at them, you will keep losing and you will like what comes after even less than a rent freeze which only affects a sliver of housing stock
