Anybody out there with surgical hubris (by which I just mean a steady hand a strong stomach and unlimited access to needles) have any advice on what type of earring to use if you’re piercing your own ears?

@j_thePA Because paying for something you could theoretically make for much less at home is ~*part of the experience*~

@Pathologuy2 Right, and parents of teenagers are additionally known for encouraging their children to let their health spiral into decay, see sleep as a weakness, ignore all family responsibilities, and …. Wait.

This isn’t about inadequate training. It’s about power and control.

@mattyfred_ I also think it’s context dependent. I, too, find it weird to call myself a surgeon in the hospital but have no problem with it to describe personality traits, like “she wanted to hem and haw over every detail of the party but I’m a surgeon, I just wanted to get things done”

Can you call yourself a surgeon while you’re a resident? Personally, I think it feels weird, like saying you’re a doctor while you’re a med student. I’d just say I was a surgical resident / trainee, but would love to hear others thoughts on this

@jzaraterod My favorite is the questions where the answer used to be “no difference” but now there’s new quality improvement data … /s

@DrSarahAxelrath Yes exactly. I was trying to get at the fact that a UDS isn’t at all the same as “have you had anything to eat since midnight” but we treat it like it is????

@relatableafmd At the end of the day it’s up to surgery/anesthesia to decide based on clinical assessment which IMO does not need to include UDS. +Meth could be this morning or 4 days ago, and -opiates could be +fentanyl or someone in withdrawal. UDS isn’t good pre-op risk stratification.

@AlissaMitche11 My partner feels this way about one prominent academic center and applied to their very middle-of-the-road fellowship in his niche subspecialty … so that they could invite him for an interview and he could turn them down. He’s gonna be so pissed if they reject him again 😂

Anyone else have a professional nemesis? An institution you are the perfect fit for but has rejected you at every step of your career? I don’t even know if I’m applying to fellowship and I’m pre-mad at them.

@CaptShehata True, but we also know emergencies *happen*. Who is fielding those emergencies? And passing the pager off to a resident who is then LOCKED out of the OR during the critical portions of a case is … not a solution

Don’t see anybody discussing the other major flaw with this analogy—pilots aren’t simultaneously responsible for other people that aren’t on the plane. Locking doors and muting phones/pagers sounds straight up dangerous, what if your patient on the floor develops a neck hematoma?

@mike_natter @cvspharmacy Not just a local issue. And to illustrate how it’s a systemic issue, yesterday I overheard a customer asking about the best time to get a flu shot “when are you quiet enough that you can step away to give a vaccine” “Umm … there is no good time. We’re busy like this all day”

@CanadianKayMD 1) obtain some iteration of this device (ie strainer and jar) 2) get medium or light roast beans, coarsely ground (can consider getting whole beans shipped to you and grinding them at home) 3) fill strainer with grounds, jar with water 4) steep in fridge for 12-18 hours 5) 😌

My daily iced coffee habit has come to an abrupt halt as I do not have access to any local coffee shops. I have so far failed bitterly (ha) at cold brewing coffee myself. Twitter, give me your best tips for good iced coffee at home.
