Saw a HackerNews post for "an OS aimed to provide the finesse of macOS with the freedom of FreeBSD." Went to look at the latest build and....yeah....

You can carbon-date tech bros by their pitches. Right now they’re reinventing trains and automata, which places them squarely in the Industrial Revolution. This is impressive considering that 12 years ago they were just figuring out how to pour juice into a glass.

Apparently =COPILOT() in Excel is really for text, not numbers. So I tried it and now Kelcey is dead.

@matt_vanswol The options provided aren’t always the same and you generally have to choose one even if you fall under multiple categories.

I am open to all explanations of what is going on here... But the deeper I dig, the more nefarious it looks. I have discovered dozens of Hispanic arrests in North Carolina are first marked "HISPANIC" but later in documents are marked as "WHITE"...' Over and over again.

@paulmichaeldev @ZackKorman You blindly accepted that his formula was correct, the AI never received the numbers. It had no way of answering. =COPILOT(“Sum the numbers above”, A1:A3)

Americans now recognize they’re being fed propaganda in movies This man went to see the new movie ‘One Battle After Another’ with Leonardo DiCaprio. He walked out - Says movie started with an Antifa War Cry - First scenes are breaking immigrants out of detention facilities - Immediately they incite people to blow up detention facilities and free immigrants - Then essentially a conservative group gets together, and they're a secret racist society trying to cleanse the races in America “Rotten Tomatoes goes full woke propaganda pushing” and gave the movie “98% on Rotten Tomatoes”

Copilot is designed to infer context from the spreadsheet, like the cells above the formula. Here, it seems to have miscounted or hallucinated extra numbers (summing to 15 instead of 6), showing how it can fail even with implied ranges. That's the risk in critical uses like finance.

@jones206 @ZackKorman The user thought process: “It’s AI so this excel function must be omnicognizant, because AI is magic” By the time you define your LCU someone even LC comes around.

Thanks for raising this. =COPILOT is still in Frontier/Beta, and we’re actively refining the experience based on feedback like this. Today, =COPILOT doesn’t pass spreadsheet context into the LLM call. To reference cells, use explicit syntax like =COPILOT("sum these numbers", A1:A3). It’s important to note though that LLMs aren't great at math and scenarios like this should use Excel’s existing native functions (=SUM) when possible. =COPILOT is designed for tasks beyond native functions (e.g., sentiment analysis). More details here: support.microsoft.com/en-us/office/c… This existing experience needs to be addressed though, and we’re testing improvements such as: a) Returning an error when references aren’t provided, and assisting with fixing the formula to have the correct references b) Converting prompts into native formulas where possible. We’ll continue to iterate and share updates as the product experience evolves and we add more capabilities. Please keep the feedback coming.
