For the record, since you clearly aren't familiar with the case: The cartridges were engraved, not the bullets. The media often referred to them as bullets, but the bullet is just the projectile, not the whole round. That's... That's not how Newtons work. That's not even what newtons *are*. You don't know how many newtons you're going to have until the force exists, not just is potential. You cannot have "newtons of energy" any more than you can have... gallons of speed, or miles of weight. Newtons comes from the work-energy principle. Kinetic energy = force in newtons times stopping distance. If the bullet stopped dead against an immovable object, for example, the newtons would be on the order of like a quarter million newtons. I'm going to repeat something I posted to you earlier and you never responded to, but I want you to read it very carefully: Maximum momentum transferred cannot exceed the bullet's original momentum. Let's do the math, okay? Let's assume a 180 grain bullet, travelling at 2,800 feet per second. We tend to talk about this in slug feet. So let's convert. There are 7,000 grains in 1 pound. There are about 32.174 pounds in one slug, at standard gravity. That gives us m(slugs) = 0.02571 lb/32.174 lb/slug, or 0.0007992 slugs. Now to get the momentum, you multiply the mass in slugs by the velocity, which was established as 2,800 ft/s. So momentum, p, is p= 0.0007992 slugs x 2,800 ft/s. Or, doing the math, that's p = 2.2378 slug ft/s. Slug feet per second is basically mathematically equivalent to pound-seconds. This is how much impulse (the pushing effect) the bullet could have, assuming it transferred 100% of it to the target. 2.24 (rounding up) pound-seconds of impulse. This is equivalent to, to give you some comparisons, a 16 pound bowling ball moving at about 1.5 inches per second, a 5 ounce baseball in a lazy underhand throw of 16 miles per hour, or a 2.25 pound mass (about the weight of a bottle of water) falling 1 foot. That's not very much. And you can't transfer all of that momentum, because so much of gets used up in penetrating the flesh, converted to sound waves, converted to thermal energy, spent on ejecta (blood, etc exiting the wound), tissue motion, creating the wound channel, deforming the bullet, and the hydrostatic shockwave. The last one you can't see, unless you watch a body in extreme slow motion as it gets shot... A human body acts like the world's most morbid Jell-o mold when it gets shot. It's almost hilarious if what was happening wasn't so awful. It warps and wobbles and jiggles like crazy. But this is because of kinetic energy, not momentum. It doesn't matter if the bullet passes through cleanly or lodges in a bone, though, you do not get all of that momentum. Much of it is converted to other things. What is left is not able to meaningfully overcome the static inertia and friction of a body at rest. I'm sorry, but you just can't math your way around this by trying to invoke "newtons" or "joules". The bullet just does not have the momentum to do what you suggest it would do. And this doesn't change with velocity, not really. Even if you accelerated the bullet into the far hypersonic ranges, like from a mass driver in a vacuum environment, you aren't going to transfer much momentum. You're just going to transfer kinetic energy. It would destroy the body as it passes in horrific ways, but from energy transfer, not momentum transfer. That's why mass driver strikes are such a devastating (but still largely theoretical) weapon: You hit a ship with a slug moving at at some measurable fraction of c and you don't knock it back, you transfer so much kinetic energy into it's like a focused nuclear explosion.
