The metamorphosis of Lohegaon(Poona/Pune/2 Wing) into an IAF base began on this day, 7 Feb 1947. No. 2 Sqn moved in from Kohat as part of the post–WWII reorg. In May, No. 8 Sqn followed, and in August, No. 3 Sqn arrived. On 21 May 1947, the station was redesignated an IAF base, transitioning from RAFl to IAF officer command. On 15 September 1947, it was formally renamed No. 2 Wing, IAF. But the real beginning was 7 Feb 1947. From that moment on, Poona never looked back. Since then, 23 fighter squadrons have been permanently based here at one time or another. That means more than half of the IAF’s fighter force has passed through this base. For the nerds, these were: 2 Sqn, 3 Sqn, 4 Sqn, 5 Sqn, 6 Sqn, 8 Sqn, 10 Sqn, 15 Sqn, 16 Sqn, 17 Sqn, 20 Sqn, 21 Sqn, 23 Sqn, 24 Sqn, 28 Sqn, 30 Sqn, 31 Sqn, 35 Sqn, 37 Sqn, 45 Sqn, 47 Sqn, 220 Sqn, 221 Sqn #IAFHistory

10th 'Defence Forces Veterans Day' was celebrated at Air Force Station Pune on 14 Jan 26. Hon'ble Higher and Technical Education Minister of Maharashtra Shri Chandrakant Bacchu Patil, graced the occasion as the Chief Guest, acknowledging the veterans' dedication and sacrifice. Lt Gen Dhiraj Seth, GOC-in-C, Southern Command, Vice Adm Anil Jaggi, Comdt, NDA, AVM Gurjot Singh Bhullar, SOA, HQ SWAC and Air Cmde Satbir Singh Rai, AOC, Air Force Station Pune were also present highlighting welfare measures and expressing gratitude to our heroes. The event was preceded by a wreath laying ceremony at the Station War Memorial to pay homage to the brave hearts for their supreme sacrifice and dedicated service to the nation. The focus was on enhancing awareness among veterans and their families on pension grievances, financial assistance, Ex Servicemen Contributory Health Scheme and welfare schemes. An IAF Tejas aircraft met with an accident during an aerial display at Dubai Air Show, today. The pilot sustained fatal injuries in the accident. IAF deeply regrets the loss of life and stands firmly with the bereaved family in this time of grief.
