Usually when Anthropic rolls out a new model, they are generous with the tokens and the models perform well. Opus 4.8 is a desperate attempt to try to stop the bleeding caused by the disastrous last month and a half or so when Claude SUCKS!!!!! This time, there is no honeymoon stage. Opus 4.8 is a token sucking, pile of shit from day one!!!!!!!!

Integrating Opus 4.8 into Copilot and the CLI is a massive upgrade for daily workflows. While context windows have expanded, the real bottleneck has always been intelligent, multi-file codebase navigation without losing track of dependencies. Having Opus 4.8 handle complex problem-solving directly inside the terminal and IDE is going to significantly reduce the friction in full-stack engineering.

@github @AnthropicAI The part I care about is large-codebase navigation. Model upgrades are nice, but coding tools get useful when they can hold the repo shape in their head and make changes reviewers can actually trace. I’d still want tests + diffs before trusting any “better coding” claim.

@github @AnthropicAI Large codebase navigation is where every previous version quietly fell apart. We have a client monorepo sitting at 180k lines. Opus 4.7 would start losing the thread around file 40 in a refactor chain. If 4.8 fixed that, we just cut our context management overhead in half.

@github @AnthropicAI you can still rely on blazing-fast, heavily discounted models for standard ux tweaks and competitor research, but having opus 4.8 sitting natively in the editor specifically for complex, multi-file refactoring means you get elite reasoning without wrestling with custom middleware
