It doesn't have to be this way - there are ways to build outlets that support robust journalism, and there are ways to do it that do not rely on corporate conglomerates. @LeverNews is but one example of a successful, reader-supported outlet that defies the trend and does real reporting. It's the kind of model that could be replicated and expanded. But both media industry decisionmakers and many rank-and-file folks working in media haven't been interested in trying to make those investments or do that work over the long haul, because it's hard and it takes a long time.
