@mercola Just be sure to buy your Magnesium supplements from reputable brands and check that they're manufactured without fillers, flow agents, excipients, binders or other junk ingredients (look at the "Other Ingredients" section).

A lesser-known nutrient is gaining attention for how it may support muscle comfort. What helps your muscles recover after a tough day?

If you're on a statin, you should be supplementing with CoQ10 Statins block cholesterol synthesis via the HMG-CoA pathway, but that same pathway also produces CoQ10, which is essential for mitochondrial energy production When CoQ10 levels fall, mitochondrial function can suffer, with downstream effects on muscle health, brain health, and cardiovascular function Ubiquinol is generally preferred because it's the reduced, more bioavailable form, but ubiquinone has also shown benefits in studies and may still be effective at a high enough dose

Sulforaphane may help your body get rid of BPA (a toxic plastic chemical) more efficiently BPA has a short half-life (~2–3 hours), but constant exposure from plastics means it's always circulating in your system Sulforaphane (found in cruciferous vegetables and especially concentrated in broccoli sprouts) activates detox pathways that may help your body excrete BPA and related plastic pollutants through urine In humans, these same pathways increased excretion of benzene (a carcinogen found in air pollution and cigarette smoke) by ~60% in just 24 hours, making sulforaphane a compelling defense against unavoidable chemical exposure

If you’re curious what I actually do for longevity, here’s my weekly routine: ~5 hrs/week of exercise (when I'm not traveling). That includes: • CrossFit (~3 hrs/wk) for strength + high-intensity work • "Zone 2" running on recovery days for cardiovascular and brain benefits I also try to sauna 5x/week at night for heat acclimation and supporting sleep quality. A simple, whole-food diet: • ~1.6 g protein/kg/day • Eggs + smoothie for breakfast, turkey burger for lunch, and vegetables/salad + meat for dinner Last is supplements: • In the morning, I take creatine (10 grams), a multivitamin, cocoa polyphenols, sulforaphane, and omega-3s • In the evening, I take magnesium, omega-3s, vitamin D + K2, PQQ, and nicotinamide riboside (NR) This is what I’ve found to be sustainable and aligns with the latest evidence.

Magnesium supplements contain different forms of magnesium. Let’s take a look at them, starting with the worst.   1. The worst magnesium - Magnesium oxide is the worst yet most common magnesium supplement. It only has a 4% absorption rate. It’s also very expensive!   2. Magnesium sulfate has a 10% absorption rate and a high laxative effect. It may help relax your muscles superficially.   3. Magnesium orotate has a 15% absorption rate. This form of magnesium can penetrate the cell and increase energy. Magnesium orotate also works as an antioxidant and supports the DNA.   4. Magnesium taurate has a 20% absorption rate and supports heart health, blood pressure, and the nervous system.   5. Magnesium lactate has a 25% absorption rate and is more gentle on the GI system. It supports the cardiovascular system and can improve energy. Magnesium lactate is often used topically, which may be beneficial for your muscles.   6. Magnesium citrate has a 30% absorption rate. It can help prevent kidney stones and is good for cardiovascular issues and blood pressure. It can also help with detoxification.   7. Magnesium malate has a 40% absorption rate. It’s beneficial for chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia.   8. Magnesium threonate has a 75% absorption rate. It supports cognitive function and is a good form of magnesium for sleep.   9. The best magnesium - Magnesium glycinate is the most absorbable type of magnesium. There are a lot of magnesium glycinate benefits. It’s gentle on the GI system, helps prevent muscle spasms, supports sleep and relaxation, and reduces stress. Magnesium glycinate may help relieve migraines and won’t interfere with other minerals.

Energy “meh”? Mood flat? Stress heavier than usual? Your B vitamins might not be working the way you think 👀 Many people can’t convert standard B’s into active forms. Methylated B’s = better absorption, better results. When your B’s click → energy, focus, mood ⚡️ bit.ly/45h1wVO

@foundmyfitness I have a hard time finding a multivitamin with farly balanced elements... way too much iron in many and insignificant presence of important vitamins and minerals. Would be interesting to detail what should be in a good multi.

These are the supplements I give my aging parents: • A daily multivitamin • Vitamin D • High-DHA omega-3s • Ubiquinol (the reduced form of CoQ10) • Sulforaphane Why these? Large RCTs show improved cognition in older adults taking a standard multivitamin, with benefits equivalent to a brain that's 2-5 years younger. For vitamin D, more than 70% of older U.S. adults are insufficient, and aging skin produces far less vitamin D from sunlight (a 70-year-old makes roughly 4x less than their 20-year-old self). DHA is a key structural fat in the brain and supports cognitive function, especially important with aging and neurodegenerative risk, while CoQ10 supports mitochondrial energy production as levels drop with age. Finally, sulforaphane is a powerful activator of Nrf2, the body's master stress-response pathway, up-regulating glutathione and phase II detox enzymes.

@texasrunnerDFW It’s not necessarily the supplement type, rather what’s in the bottle/jar, dosing and where it’s sourced. 70%+ of available supplements are not what they say on the label. Fillers/Excipients/Chinese sourcing… all lead to ineffective outcomes.

Think all your menopause symptoms are “just hormones”? Your gut may have something to say about that. 👇 bit.ly/4oQFHo4 Leaky gut can crank up inflammation, stress your immune system, and worsen hot flashes, mood shifts, joint pain, and more. The good news? Daily habits that support your gut = big relief. 💚
