I'm thrilled to continue teaching @GeorgetownCSS this fall—2026 will be my first year teaching back-to-back semesters. SEST-6650 is an absolute blast to run, and things are getting even weirder as AI gets better.
Ryan Fedasiuk@RyanFedasiuk

A world on fire, and zettabytes at your fingertips. There’s never been a more important time to piece it all together. I'm amped to join the faculty @GeorgetownCSS this spring as an Adjunct Assistant Professor, teaching SEST-6650: Hands-On Open Source Intelligence.

Consolidating my Kimi K3 takes so far: - Kimi K3 is exactly on-trend compared to what you would expect based on historic Chinese progress. K3 is still well-behind Mythos and GPT-Sol in capabilities. China remains ~6mo behind. - K3 was likely produced through violations of US export controls. The controls are working and better enforcing controls would make them work even better. - Kimi/Moonshot already report having insufficient compute to serve their models. The US has an immense strategic advantage by having way more compute than China. This advantage is key to the AI race. - Kimi K3 cannot be run on the laptop. It must be run on the cloud. China lacks compute to both train and run models and this is good for the US. - Even if the US and China had equally good AIs (they don't), it will matter who has more compute to run more of those AIs. You'd rather have 10,000 US-Mythos defending against 100 China-Mythos than the other way around!

my good mega-cracked friend (IPhO silver medalist, working as quant trading rn) is looking to career change to Robotics / AI, cause he felt at some point trading was not a value add to society (i dont agree, but whatever) He is research oriented but also very good software engineer. If you are interested in hiring him plz DM me potential job description and I will give you his email!

China is interested in integrating ai to infrastructure and not hijacking everyone’s data and forcing workers out of jobs. Hope China wins this stupid fucking arms race.

The Chinese president stood on a stage in Shanghai and laid out China's entire AI playbook in one speech. It was his first-ever in-person appearance at the World AI Conference. I went through the whole thing and pulled out everything that matters. - he opened with his signature maxim that great changes unseen in a century are unfolding across the world. - he said AI development should not be a solo performance by a single country but a symphony of international cooperation. - he reaffirmed China's commitment to open source AI in the name of openness and shared benefit. - he warned against overstretching the concept of national security in AI, where one country puts its own security above everyone else's. - he said China opposes the emergence of new historical injustices in AI, one of the strongest-worded lines in the speech. - he pledged 5,000 AI training opportunities for developing countries over the next five years, naming ASEAN, the Arab League, the African Union, CELAC, the SCO, and BRICS. - he committed to giving 30 countries access to a Chinese AI weather system that provides early disaster warnings. - a day before the speech, 29 countries signed the agreement creating a new World AI Cooperation Organization headquartered in Shanghai. strip away the politics and one thing stands out to me. he didn't pitch benchmarks or chatbots. he pitched AI as infrastructure, weather warnings for countries that lose thousands of lives to storms they never saw coming, and training programs for regions the AI boom has skipped. meanwhile most of the Western AI conversation revolves around which lab ships the next frontier model. I don't care who wins the race. I care whether the computing power reaches the people who need it. The full speech is below, and it's worth your time.

@rocketalignment Reminds me of Dwarkesh's claim about "dreaming": for real continual learning, the knowledge needs to make its way into the weights!

Risacher trade is a win/win/win. For Atlanta, Risacher had one of their worst adjusted plus/minus values last season. They won 18 of 21 games when he began coming off the bench instead of starting. Replacing him with Dort takes them from 41.3 wins to 43.3 in my model.

So, a lot of Mercor/Surge type companies have popped up in China (EnableExpert, Stardust, Integer Intelligence) These guys have a network of subject matter human experts (finance, law, coding, etc) They basically pair an LLM with a human expert and generate training data. Human expert asks queries, the LLM generates answers, and if the LLM is wrong somewhere, then the human expert corrects it. This data, generated from these interactions, is sold to model labs Just like Mercor/Surge sell this data to Anthropic/OpenAI, etc EnableExpert and Stardust do the same to Chinese model labs

@BrianLe_Blanc @omooretweets Why is the aggregation difficult? Assuming that each card is linked to an address, don't you just do: SELECT COUNT(DISTINCT c.address) AS households_with_ai_spend FROM cards c JOIN transactions t ON t.card_id = c.card_id WHERE t.mcc IN (AI_Vendor_MCC_list);

@fleetingbits Is it true that distillation is what drives Chinese progress? As far as I can tell, it's an open empirical question. The Anthropic papers do tell us that Chinese labs have a revealed preference towards distillation though. Moonshot wouldn't do it if it wasn't useful.

anthropic, at least in their public policy papers, has not made the argument around distillation well; we've had a lot of emergent misalignment papers; but, not one paper that really studied distillation or made the argument that distillation is what drives chinese progress
