Taxing 2nd homes in NYC much like taxing 2nd homes in San Diego gives the cities more revenue And will do nothing to build more housing nor make it more affordable nor will it I bet make the streets cleaner or result in less homelessness nor create more child care It will likely pay for more city employees salaries and pensions
Hal Singer@HalSinger

Hadn’t been following the @ZohranKMamdani second home (“pied-à-terre”) tax closely until this @TheEconomist article reviewed it. The conditions under which the tax would apply are smartly written to target only the uber rich who own a second home in NYC (1) worth more than $5M (2) whose owners are not tax residents and (3) do not rent them out. Yet the neoliberal rag maintains the tax “could do real harm,” citing a billionaire (and non-economist) who speculates it could cost the city jobs. Get a fricking grip. There is no nexus between the tax and job creation. On the benefit side, the tax would “nudge some absentee owners to sell to New Yorkers who might make greater use of them,” as the story admits. And the tax would raise $500M per year in revenues. Seems like a no brainer and easily passes a cost-benefit test. Go get em!

A large part of loneliness is people's unwillingness to be realistic with themselves. Why would a man that "has it all" date you if you don't "have it all" yourself? Assortative mating is very real and not accepting this will lead to frustration and sadness.

As representative for the male delegation, the best we can offer for her is a guy named Scott who is 5’9 who makes $75,000 a year in Denver, Colorado. He still watches NELK videos and has a bad knee. He has a good heart and is pretty good at tennis (JV county champ).

@souljagoyteller Of the "quality TV" shows everyone is going to recommend--Mad Men, Breaking Bad, Americans, eg-- only the Wire lives up to its reputation.

Fuck it: I think I’m going to finally break my longstanding boycott of TV shows. I’m definitely gonna try to finish The Sopranos and watch Twin Peaks, but what else do you recommend? Please have them be not too long and very manageable

@Sad_Liberal I found Lagarde's dry comment revealing: “What is a little strange is that there is a tendency by some to assume that it’s business as usual,” Christine Lagarde, the president of the European Central Bank, said on Tuesday when asked about the seeming exuberance of markets . . .

@jamesavery7890 @aphofer So the schools are getting deluged by middle-class applicants and cannot find enough full-pay students? Seems hard to believe and is inconsistent with the article.

@Sad_Liberal @aphofer This article is about the quantity of applicants per available incoming class slots, plummeting the acceptance rate. That’s different than the makeup of the class (full-paying families as a percent of total class)

I sit on the board of a private school in NYC. Full-pay (ie wealthy) families moving out is definitely happening, and they aren't being replaced.

Last week, OpenAI argued that the government may need to create a vast new welfare state to counter AI-induced unemployment and inequality. And yet, the company's leaders have ignored - or abetted - attacks on actually existing social programs vox.com/politics/48546…

I say things a lot of people don't know about. this is one of them. Iran loses because they have to rebuild a ton of stuff and their Supreme Leader was killed. We lose because the straits are closed and tolled. Everyone loses in war. See?
Dilan Esper@dilanesper

I've mentioned several times recently that war is negative-sum. This is a big thing that pro-war commentators don't understand about war. And it explains why they obsess with the irrelevant criterion of "winning" rather than what is actually happening. Let's explore this topic.

I do understand that I am never going to eliminate the word "won" from this discourse because it does useful work-- obviously North Vietnam did win the Vietnam War in a strategic sense, for instance. But North Vietnam would have been far richer if Ho had never invaded the South!

Once per year is enough after someone has gotten a Novavax priming series. For priming, we usually recommend a schedule of 2 shots 2 months apart, and then a 3rd 6 months later. Or getting every ~6 months for a couple of years accomplishes similar, in 4 doses instead of 3. But many also just get one every 6 months in perpetuity. There aren’t any harms there, CDC guidance allows it, and insurance must cover it. The only limitation is routine vaccine side effects and the inconvenience.

Idk who needs to hear this, but a well-fitting mask alone is not enough to prevent you from catching SARS2 infections. And idk who needs to hear this, but you also don’t need to sit at home in isolation to avoid SARS2 infections. Those are two very different, but both incorrect, realities that I often see being promoted in the community. Oftentimes by the same people, which is really confusing, to say the least. You should feel comfortable participating in social activities without being paralyzed by stress, and you can, but it requires layered interventions that actually make sense, in addition to masking, including: staying up to date on Nuvaxovid, nasal sprays, and support of the innate immune system through diet and supplementation.

generally when you see something like this it means the advocates expect a lopsided result. (when a case is seen as close you are more likely to see Katyal.)
