We just raised $5.6m from our top customers on Frec, and the round was oversubscribed in under 48 hours!
Here’s how it all went down.
Customers have been asking to invest in Frec since we launched, so we kept track of those who asked, provided valuable feedback, or referred customers.
The list started growing quickly after launching long short. Although we had the bulk of our Series A still in the bank, we saw an opportunity to make our top customers owners in Frec. So I pitched the idea to the board.
The pitch was simple. Customers who want to invest work at some of the most impressive companies in the world, like Nvidia, Meta, Apple, Netflix, Snowflake, Databricks, Stripe, Shopify, Uber, Robinhood, Plaid, Workday, Block, Two Sigma, JP Morgan, and more. Their colleagues are exactly the type of people who could benefit from Frec the most. Offering these customers ownership would create an incredible customer advisory board.
The board agreed. And when I sent the invites to the customers, the reactions were heartwarming:
“Heck yes, I’m 100% in. Thank you for thinking of me for this. I’d love to be part of it. You know I’m very bullish on Frec’s future.”
“I am impressed with how smart it is to engage your best customers with ownership this way.”
“I'm glad to be a customer and now glad to be an investor. Eager to see how things grow and develop.”

So we raised the money in a YC SAFE note for a fast and efficient close, and we used an AngelList Roll Up Vehicle (RUV) to keep our cap table clean.
I’m excited to welcome our newest investors. We always value customers who engage with us and hope to include more of them as investors in future opportunities.

This will be my last day as a Co-Founder of @OpenPhone. Because starting today, OpenPhone is rebranding to Quo. Oh, and we've raised $105 million in growth financing to help businesses never lose a customer again.
You probably have a lot of questions, so let me break down what's happening:
1) $105 million in growth financing
We have raised $105 million in growth financing led by @generalcatalyst's Customer Value Fund and with participation of existing investors @craft_ventures, @slow, @GarageCapital, and @ycombinator. This funding gives us the resources to invest further in what our customers love most and to help us reach more businesses.
2) Why OpenPhone is becoming Quo
When @mahyarraissi and I started OpenPhone in 2018, our mission wasn't just to help businesses make calls and send messages—it was to help them build stronger customer relationships so they could grow faster.
You can even see in our YC application we described ourselves as "phone meets CRM."
But as the years went by, we realized the name "OpenPhone" only tells part of our story. While it worked when we were focused only on the business phone, it started limiting where our customers needed us to go.
With Quo as our name, we can finally tell the full story.
Think of Quo as your business's customer hub, with phone at the center. It's how you win customers and keep them happy.
Although our name has changed, what matters to us hasn’t. We are still obsessed with building great products and helping our customers never miss an opportunity.
3) What's changing with the product
We're launching major upgrades to our voice AI agent Sona based on everything we've learned from our customers:
- You can now start using Sona for free on all plans with our new tiered, usage-based model
- Every customer gets 10 free Sona calls per month
- Sona can now handle more sophisticated scenarios and can be trained on custom jobs
- It can also now transfer calls to a human if needed

Back in 2017, we set out on a humble mission: build the best PostgreSQL for time-series data.
Developers thought we were crazy. PostgreSQL didn’t scale. PostgreSQL wasn't fast. Time-series needed a NoSQL database. Or so they said.
Eight years later, so much has changed: PostgreSQL has won. There are no more "SQL vs. NoSQL" debates. MongoDB, Cassandra, InfluxDB, and other NoSQL databases are seen as technical dead ends. Snowflake and Databricks are acquiring PostgreSQL companies.
Eight years later, that small startup has also grown into something much bigger:
✅ 2,000+ customers, from AI disruptors like Mistral and Hugging Face to industrial giants like Schneider Electric and Caterpillar
✅ Mid eight-digit ARR, growing >100% year over year
✅ $180 million raised from top investors betting on our vision
Along the way, we outgrew the “time-series database” label.
We added performance improvements for real-time analytics, scalable vector search for agentic workloads, a hybrid row-columnar data store for native compression and faster queries, and much more.
All while staying 100% PostgreSQL. Not a fork.
We looked in the mirror and realized that, while serving our customers and solving their problems, we had become the modern Postgres for the analytical and agentic era.
So today we’re changing our name from Timescale to TigerData.
This new name doesn’t change who we are; it reflects who we’ve become and how our customers already use us: the fastest Postgres.
Same team, same commitment, same logo – now with a larger canvas.
And of course, we are just getting started. It’s go time.

In October 2020, @DrJBhattacharya authored the Great Barrington Declaration, which called for an end to covid lockdowns.
Four days later, Dr. Fauci and then NIH Director Francis Collins emailed each other to plot a "devastating takedown of its premises.
It wasn't long after that old Twitter began putting him on a blacklist to prevent his tweets from trending.
That scientist who was censored and defamed by the government will now be leading the NIH.

Mark Farrell for the next Mayor of San Francisco
Decided recently I was going to vote for Mark Farrell as my top choice for the next Mayor of San Francisco and thought I’d share my thoughts here in case it’s helpful for others
San Francisco to me is the best friggin city, but we have the worst friggin government. San Franciscans are united in that we all agree our government is super bad. Heck, possibly the only thing the entire country agrees on is that our government is atrociously run
San Francisco leaders have squandered the greatest natural and economic resources in the world in pursuit of their own political careers
You know this. I know this. Everyone knows this.
Specifically, I mean our *leaders* who create the policy but do not seem to show any urgency at addressing the issues of its citizens
SF voters: We’d like the schools to open during the pandemic
SF government: We hear you, we will rename the schools
SF voters: We’d like more housing
SF government: We hear you, but unfortunately the developer didn’t kiss up to us enough so we’ll keep this Nordstrom parking lot...a Nordstrom parking lot. It’s really important that people kiss up to us enough
SF voters: We’d like we’d like you to stop the ranksacking of Walgreens / dealing of fentanyl / general lawlessness
SF government: We hear you completely. We’d decided to increase the penalties for remodeling your kitchen without a permit
I mean this sounds like insane satire, and yet this is the literal truth of San Francisco public policy
It’s like our government has no urgency to address a single issue whatsoever. If you are a shop owner and someone broke into your store, unfortunately the last person who will care is your elected official. They’ll offer you an insulting grant to help cover a fraction of the costs of the broken glass, but they won’t even consider stopping the broken glass in the first place
Last week a burrito place in the Mission got broken 3 times! In a single week! After that, the shop owner decided she's quitting
The people of San Francisco simply want a Mayor that will listen to their problems and then actually do something about it. At least that’s what I want
More precisely, for me the single criteria for choosing who to vote for is whether they will *actually do something* versus just *talking* about doing something
Will we have change or more of the same?
To me, Mark Farrell is the only candidate who views that city as an amazing place but one with serious problems that need to be addressed now. Now and with urgency.
My sense is Mark Farrell isn't running for mayor for personal glory, he is running because the city needs help. The city has some problems, he has some experience with these issues, and he’s been called into service for that reason. If you are a sane person, being a public servant has to be a thankless job you only do out of a sense of obligation to others. My sense is that Mark Farrell is a sane person
Because we have ranked choice voting, I’m listing the current mayor London Breed as my second choice on the ballot. While I agree with a lot of her positions, it’s inarguable that under her term San Francisco has deteriorated while the corruption in the bureaucratic apparatus has only grown. A vote for more of the same is a vote for more of the same, even if her positions are ones I agree often with
I’m listing Daniel Lurie, heir to the Levi’s fortune as my third choice. If he’s elected, I hope he will do what he says he will, but there’s nothing in this past track record or information produced by this campaign to show he will. His only track record thus far is running a nonprofit in a city that’s been plagued by a non-profit industrial complex that’s proven more adept at growing their budgets than fixing issues
Lastly, I’d like to say that San Francisco is awesome. We deserve better from our leaders. We'll survive under Breed or Lurie, but Mark Farrell as Mayor gives us our best chance to flourish
We’re just a darn good city with awesome people, stunning natural beauty, and the leading economy of the information age. Despite the possibly the most wholly incompetent city government in the history of city governments, the people of San Francisco keep winning
A friend shared this photo with me of her daughter meeting Mark Farrell when he was interim Mayor in 2018 after the then mayor passed away. This is the kind of politician I want.
Mark is going to be a tough leader, but his motivation is to help the people of San Francisco. Those who know him, tell me this is who he is – a kind person who’ll help your kids take off their boots on a rainy day. Mark is running for Mayor to help.
And I believe Mark Farrell more than any other candidate thinks we’re just a great city and deserve a great government. Now and with urgency.
Let me make this as clear as possible. A vote for every single candidate except Mark Farrell is a vote for more of the same
If you want change and think we deserve better, Mark Farrell is the choice

John Murphy, the man who welcomed me from the field calling my games and into the broadcast booth with open arms. I learned so much from him. I will always cherish the memories from the booth with his iconic calls and all the laughs we shared. Never would have imagined the Bears Christmas Eve game in 2022 would be our last call, but I look forward to many great times ahead.
