@giantgio New hardware with decent shaders allowing for more realistic water. Developers got excited and everyone starting making worlds with lots of water. It’s essentially the same thing as how every game is adding ray tracing in modern times.

Is there an actual explanation for this aesthetic trend at the time, or was it just the right time period for that particular vibe in video games, design, advertising, etc?
