a few days ago i realized i have a 15-year log of every book i've read—i started writing down every book i read in 2011. as i was combing through this list i would occasionally stop on a title and realize i couldn't remember a single thing about it, and this was 60% of the books

@BretVDB She's wrong about his learning ,but correct about the book itself. She joins other writers like Faulkner and Blair, who praised its genius but found it difficult to genuinely like. Both Woolf and Faulkner better executed what Joyce set out to do.

Virginia Woolf’s diary entries on James Joyce’s Ulysses: “An illiterate, underbred book it seems to me; the book of a self taught working man, and we all know how distressing they are, how egotistic, insistent, raw, striking, and ultimately nauseating. … I finished ‘Ulysses’ and think it is a misfire. Genius it has, I think; but of the inferior water. The book is diffuse. It is brackish. It is pretentious. It is underbred, not only in the obvious sense, but in the literary sense. A first-rate writer, I mean, respects writing too much to be tricky; startling; doing stunts.”

What Does That Nature Say to You: Hong’s funniest in quite some time, including his best drunken dinner table freak out yet. A quiet and devastating portrait of a guy who, unfortunately, just sucks. Some of his most gorgeous, washed out images. The pinks and greens are hypnotic.
