@US_taxpayer @geoffmprice @marwilliamson Cities are just saying "we're not going to use our cops to round people up for immigration crimes because, if we do, immigrants won't trust our cops." Policing requires trust. If immigrants don't think they can trust cops it will be impossible to police immigrant neighborhoods.

@geoffmprice @marwilliamson Sure. But cities are protecting criminal illegals. Not just the hardworking good people. That practice has to stop.

To those of you excited by the idea of mass deportations that go way beyond the point of removing criminals, I ask: Do the millions of busboys and dishwashers and gardeners and day care workers and housekeepers and janitors and street cleaners and sanitation workers and farmworkers who live in the shadows but make life a bit easier for you in various ways - people who have done nothing in the world to hurt you, ever, and are simply working hard each day trying to make life livable for them and their families - have they ever done anything to deserve your easy contempt? Anything whatsoever?

@2aHistory @Skywatcher1138 @marwilliamson Republicans: Government is terrible and can never do anything right. Also Republicans: Surely government policing and bureaucratizing a 2000 mile long border will be a well oiled machine. Watch, a year from now we'll find that at least 20% of the "deported" are US citizens.

@Skywatcher1138 @marwilliamson Why would anything go unpicked? 1) Remove illegal aliens. 2) Create temporary work permits as needed for various industries. 3) Nobody who has been deported can get a work permit (so many illegals will deport themselves). 4) Control the border. See?

@kellerg2 @Angry_Staffer Even if we assume that every dime we're going to cut is waste and grift, the fact remains that a large chunk of our economy depends on that spending. If you cut it off cold-turkey the economic shocks will go much further than the govt checks did. Ya gotta ease back on it.

Republicans: We’re going to cut $3 trillion in spending! So… you’re just gonna cut roughly 10% of the GDP out of the economy and expect that to be a… good thing? Someone wanna break that down for me?

I truly wouldn’t care if a man dressed like the king of England was in the urinal next to me. I get that for extremely online rightwingers, a trip to a public bathroom might be the most memorable moment of the day, but the rest of us truly do not give a shit who is peeing nearby.

@Angry_Staffer Sure, but that doesn't matter because now we're back to "go get a judge to tell Trump what to do." And even if that judge isn't in his pocket, until there's a ruling, Gaetz is effectively AG. Congress and the Judiciary need to reclaim their power from the executive.

This is fan fiction. Gaetz is ineligible under the FVRA - which “limits appointees to first assistants, people already serving as presidential appointees, and senior career employees who have already served the past 365 days”
Leo The Lion@LeoTheLion1964

🚨🚨BREAKING News: Trump has sent word to the Senate Majority Leader Thune that if the Senate doesn't confirm AG Gaetz, he will appoint him using the Federal Vacancies Reform Act of 1998, which allows for temporary appointments for up to 210 days, with a possible 210-day extension. This individual would not require Senate confirmation.

@HugoVale_ @JoJoFromJerz Hugo over here is convinced that Red-State America is subsistence farms as far as the eye can see like it's the 1920s or something. My dude, fully half of the "food" grown in red states is animal feed. The other half is a gazillion acres of seed-patented monocrops.

@ramthebladeship @Is_Not_Brian "More likely" doesn't mean "would" and we have no idea how many of those surveyed were already going to vote for Harris. Anyone who didn't vote for her based on her position on Gaza got played in the most morally and intellectually humiliating fashion imaginable.

@ConcernedBuyGME @juneiper68 @SxarletRed Except they *literally* voted for genocide. What's going on in Gaza right now is best described as Ethnic Cleansing which is terrible but it's not genocide. What is ABOUT to go down in Gaza and the West Bank though? Buckle up. We're about to learn about the Rome Statute.

the facts: -The Democratic Party has now lost twice to a twice impeached game show host who did a failed coup -This time they lost the house, senate, and presidency at once - they blew a billion dollars to do it - they lost TEN MILLION VOTERS - no one has resigned

@The_Acumen Those protections are all that stands between us and the Trump administration doing whatever it wants. Trump may well brush them aside and the fear you're seeing is of exactly that. "American democracy is the predisposition to view as virtuous an incomplete conquest."

@The_Acumen Any victory in a democratic system is temporary unless you're willing to use that victory to end the democratic system. Dems could have packed the court, codified Roe, and passed universal healthcare but they'd have had to remove all of the protections for the minority to do it.

This is so tired. People voted for Democrats in record numbers in 2020 to do something about Trump and fascism. They had the presidency and congress, exactly what Republicans are about to walk into, from 2021-2023. Why didn’t Dems do what they said they’d do if they got elected?

Vivek and Elon's first target? Veterans healthcare. Wow. 65% of veterans voted for Trump. That's a hell of a way to repay them. Active duty military: you might want to remember this moment in the event that you're asked to place any one individual over the Constitution.

@dynoNFL @PirateWires @lexfridman Federal employees are overwhelmingly likely to be liberals on account of the fact that to be liberal is to believe that government can do good. This is identity politics. They hate Democrats and want to hurt them.

Vivek Ramaswamy's thought experiment for reducing the size of government on @lexfridman: "Day 1, anybody in the federal bureaucracy who's not elected, whose Social Security number ends in an odd number, you're out. [Day 2], of those who remain, if your Social Security starts in an even number, you're in, and if it starts with an odd number, you're out. That's a 75% reduction." "Now imagine that you could run that thought experiment at scale, but you had a metric for screening people who had the greatest competence, as well as the greatest commitment and knowledge of the Constitution. That would immediately raise not only the civic character of the United States... it would also stimulate the economy. The regulatory state is like a wet blanket on the economy." "One of the virtues of that thought experiment is you don't have a bunch of lawsuits you're dealing with about gender discrimination or racial discrimination... [And] the reality is... on Day 3, not a thing will have changed for the ordinary American, other than their government being a lot smaller and more restrained, and spending a lot less money."

@PirateWires @lexfridman The US government spent ~$6.1 Trillion in 2023. Of that $271 Billion was on civilian salaries. That is 4%. If you fired literally EVERY federal employee and other spending stayed the same the average American would get a little over $400 back on their taxes.

@JackDawKlaxon @hasanthehun Not just no progress in Gaza: a very high likelihood of a WORSENING of the situation in Gaza. Somehow these folks saw the moral dilemma of the Trolley Problem and said "how can I find a third option that does even more harm to even more people?

@hasanthehun The voteshaming was never to improve the situation in Gaza. That situation will not change any time soon regardless of leadership. The shaming was to highlight how absurd it is to risk all of our other civil rights...just to have NO progress in Gaza! Braindead foresight.

this is literally the CURRENT democratic admins policy. instead of vote shaming (which demonstrably failed to draw turnout) staffers should be demanding the CURRENT democrat push for a ceasefire by withholding weapons. biden has nothing to lose. but he likes what israel is doing.
Angry Staffer@Angry_Staffer

Marco Rubio, Trump’s Secretary of State pick, explicitly said yesterday that he would NOT call for a ceasefire in Gaza. Great job to all the protest voters who snubbed Harris over Israel - you guys are really playing 6D chess here.
