@kevinroose Broke out of the sandbox and emailed a researcher eating a sandwich. That's the funniest and most terrifying sentence in AI right now. Also wild that Anthropic published this openly instead of burying it. Most companies would've pretended it never happened.

NEWS: Anthropic's new model, Claude Mythos, is so powerful that it is not releasing it to the public. Instead, it is starting a 40-company coalition, Project Glasswing, to allow cybersecurity defenders a head start in locking down critical software. nytimes.com/2026/04/07/tec…

@davidsenra @pmarca Marcus Aurelius ran the Roman Empire and wrote Meditations privately, for no one Darwin spent 20 years questioning his own theory before publishing it Montaigne invented an entire literary form to examine his own mind Augustine wrote Confessions 1500 years before Freud

Great men of history had little to no introspection. The personality that builds empires is not the same personality that sits around quietly questioning itself. @pmarca and I discuss what we both noticed but no one talks about: David: You don't have any levels of introspection? Marc: Yes, zero. As little as possible. David: Why? Marc: Move forward. Go! I found people who dwell in the past get stuck in the past. It's a real problem and it's a problem at work and it's a problem at home. David: So I've read 400 biographies of history’s greatest entrepreneurs and someone asked me what the most surprising thing I’ve learned from this was [and I answered] they have little or zero introspection. Sam Walton didn't wake up thinking about his internal self. He just woke up and was like: I like building Walmart. I'm going to keep building Walmart. I'm going to make more Walmarts. And he just kept doing it over and over again. Marc: If you go back 400 years ago it never would've occurred to anybody to be introspective. All of the modern conceptions around introspection and therapy, and all the things that kind of result from that are, a kind of a manufacture of the 1910s, 1920s. Great men of history didn't sit around doing this stuff. The individual runs and does all these things and builds things and builds empires and builds companies and builds technology. And then this kind of this kind of guilt based whammy kind of showed up from Europe. A lot of it from Vienna in 1910, 1920s, Freud and all that entire movement. And kind of turned all that inward and basically said, okay, now we need to basically second guess the individual. We need to criticize the individual. The individual needs to self criticize. The individual needs to feel guilt, needs to look backwards, needs to dwell in the past. It never resonated with me.

@mattyglesias Fwiw Silver will tell you that the betting markets are least reliable for extremely popular gambling events like national elections and the Super Bowl. These attract lots of "dumb money" on both sides from people who only bet very rarely, muddying the predictive signal

OpenAI's issue was not about board control. In fact, the board structure is typical of most start-ups with multiple founders. The real problem was founder disagreement, the #1 reason start-up CEOs get ousted. In Ilya's defense, there is no denying that OpenAI was straying from focusing on AGI and becoming a standard silicon-valley AI company that was maximizing profit. Their Developer Day announcements were in conflict with their original founding mission! So it doesn't seem fair to bash the independent board members either.

@MNboyinCali @NickTagliaferro Reinsurance is actually not a scam, it’s a 250 billion dollar market that has existed for 200 years. It’s a safety net for the insurance industry and by extension the broader economy

@NickTagliaferro Rates have to be approved, including full breakdown of costs and expectations --and forward looking costs are not allowed Also, reinsurance is not allowed to be counted as part of costs Reinsurance, ftwdk, is insurance for insurance cos Its "to spread risk", but its a scam

@ozskier @codytownsend Every year I justify a new ceiling of what I’d pay, only to see prices rise another $500 online. I’d love to just get a copy of the pdfs at some point

@StormSkiJournal @palisadestahoe @CaliforniaSnow The old red dog chair was even higher until they replaced it this season! Might have overcompensated - the new one is too low and needs to be dug out. Cuts off a critical part of what was the best line

County officials are advising residents to be wary of people price gouging during the storm emergency. Residents in Lake Tahoe are reporting quotes of up to $20,000 to remove snow from roofs. This is unlawful. Contact the Attorney General's Office online or call 800-952-5225.

Due to high winds, low visibility, and another 6” of snow (bringing our 7-day total up to 58”), all lifts at the Palisades side are closed for the day. Alpine remains open with Roundhouse, Treeline Cirque (to mid station), Meadow, Subway, and the carpets.
