The kid already proves they know 8+4=12, therefore, the fact that they put the 2 and the 1 isnt there means they forgot about it. Thats a mistake.

Its the difference between trying to relearn addition (learns nothing new and lowers interest) and understanding about the importance of checking your work for oversights.
