I don’t want to bite the hand the feeds but I think YouTube is going in the wrong direction right now and, if they don’t course correct, they’ll likely lose some of their dominance. For starters, they’re REALLY trying to shove shorts down our throats. When I open the mobile app, it’s all shorts at the top now. When I open YT on desktop, there’s maybe 3 long forms at the top followed by a wall of shorts. I don’t go to YouTube for shorts and I don’t think most others do either. We have other preferred platforms for that. But YouTube seems so obsessed with competing with those platforms, that they’ll literally prioritize the best real estate on the site with content most people aren’t there to see. My take: Focus on and serve people what most of them are opening the platform to see… long form content. Let IG and TikTok have the shorts. Be the best platform for long form! My second beef: The YouTube homepage on desktop is so frustrating now. It’ll show you 3 video suggestions at the top and, if you don’t like those, too bad! Refreshing the home page used to be like a reroll… I’m not interested in these suggestions right now, show me a few others… but now, refreshing does nothing. It just serves the same videos. Don’t want to see those? Too bad! YouTube has decided these are what you should watch so don’t bother refreshing. Sometimes I’m in the mood for tech explainers, sometimes I’m in the mood for comedy, sometimes I want gaming content… A few refreshes would typically eventually show me what I’m in the mood for… but not anymore. This sounds crazy because YouTube is a giant part of my living but I find myself using it as a viewer less and less as I become increasingly frustrated with the experience… I know most people that follow me don’t care about this but, as someone who genuinely loves YouTube, I’m really bummed to see it degrade like this and feel that, if I’m finding myself using it less and less, others probably are too. It just bums me out and I needed to rant.
