@emnode @sleepy_devo AFAB as a term works just fine. It's got none of the bad parts of "biological woman", and also all the decent bits about it. Trans is still preferable, but AFAB is good enough.

"Biological female" is probably slightly redundant but it isn't offensive and it's useful for thinking about trans issues in a way that helps put liberals on more solid ground so that we can win more elections and help more people including trans people Here is a way I think we could talk/think about trans issues that would put us on more solid ground so that we can help more trans people and everyone else: (1) Biology is a scientific framework built atop a set of objective facts. Being male and female is not socially constructed (2) A woman is an adult human female. A man is an adult human male. All the individual instances of men and women combine to give us our socially constructed ideas about men and women (3) A transwoman is a person who is *transitioning* from the set of people who are considered men to the set of people who are considered women. It's *very* important to understand that "trans" means *transitioning* (4) transition is a kind of movement from one state A to another state B. Where a transwoman is in that process is going to vary. Mere self identification doesn't take you very far, but some trans people may be asymptotically approaching B. (5) This is a good principle: When you can make someone happy and it costs you nothing, do it. Things like names and pronouns are entirely socially constructed and accessible to all trans people. (6) There are opportunities and spaces that were explicitly created for females (grounded not in gender, but in biological differences). These should not automatically be assumed to be accessible to all trans people (7) There are many day to day things that just reflect common sense judgment about where the trans person is in that transitioning spectrum. Bathrooms are like that. (8) Medical care and the best interests of children are understudied empirical questions. Not moral questions. We should respect parents a lot. (9) Finally, we reaffirm our belief that trans people should be free to express themselves as they are. We support trans people being safe and treated fairly. We believe in freedom and individual autonomy. We support trans people because this is America, and we support the First Amendment (10) Therefore, I propose that the following is the proper liberal and winning message: "I support trans people because I believe in freedom and support the First Amendment. I will never stop fighting to ensure everyone is treated with dignity and fairness no matter how they express themselves. I also believe in the value of opportunities and spaces that are explicitly grounded in biological differences, and we should protect them for the benefit of women and girls."

Contractor pours a brand new sidewalk and finishes the job, then the owner refuses to pay saying there’s no rebar. So the contractor tears it out himself. After putting in the labor, time, and materials, not getting paid isn’t something most people are just going to accept, especially when rebar isn’t even required for most sidewalks

@_maxgranger This reminds me of that Knowing Better video exploring neoslavery that pointed out you could be charged for carrying a concealed weapon if you had a razor in your pocket... if you were black.

@Djames79594382 @RealPostFolder the course of treatment for male and female bodies can be wildly different. the dosage, type of medication, types of testing, diagnoses, etc is different depending on sex. this is actually a pretty big deal, and you can definitely be an ally while being concerned about this.

@eyezcreems @thocpodcast I feel like there's little reason to lie on that peace treaty. Besides, Jefferson's low moral character is solely due to his participation of slavery and the treatment of the people he owned. It is not due to his (non-existent) habit of lying.

@thocpodcast I think it’s odd that you would urge us to take Thomas Jefferson at his word for why the Barbary war was pursued and then immediately argue that Jefferson was a man of low moral character. Why should we take him at his word if he was an immoral guy? Shouldn’t we expct him to lie?

@frenziedflame20 @MeidasTouch Nah, the 2nd place guy is saying "109 mail votes late into the elections, and I suspect they might be in favor of the 1st-place guy. Might be worth looking into that..."

@ZillsMichael @marten_sorby @SebastianDaGae @Zeke_Darwin Big changes are the sum of a lot of smaller changes happening over timespans so long our written historical record will most likely have decayed by the time those smaller changes add up to a new species of animals.

@grirkin @OJ23s @Boris72947177 @gem_ste Then which standard of the time are we adhering to? If you're talking about British societial standards, Britain was not pro-slavery at all. That's part of why abolitionism (Except for the parts of the empire where it was profitable) happened in the first place.

@OJ23s @Boris72947177 @gem_ste it was a different time bro we can't hold them to the same standards. compensation was given all the time for slave owners otherwise there would be outrage. thinking they could be le woke is just naive, they were the best thing around for slaves and thats the truth

@Pearl_Donut @androgynator It's amazing just how often this image gets used as a way to ignore all critism. That reminds me of that time when I argued with someone over gun rights. Charlie Kirk got brought up, his argument stated, I restated Kirk's argument, this image got brought up and I was blocked.

There is no theory about the problem of ocean acidification. It is called the evil twin of climate change, evil because the consequences will be far more serious. We passed the ocean pH tipping point 5 years ago; in 15 years we will reach the end point and lose most of the fish, whales, seals, birds and food supply for 3 billion people. In addition, the primary mechanism that regulates the climate and life support system for the planet will be destroyed. The above series of events are also stated by the IPCC with a very high degree of confidence (100%), its going to happen, yet it is almost completely ignored. Via Howard Dryden
