@Alan_Couzens Had a test recently where it was taken from earlobe…data was a lot better than any finger prick test id done previously

Possible, but unlikely for it to drop that quickly. Key tips from my end: - Thoroughly wash hands prior with hot water ( this also helps with blood flow) - Alcohol swab on site prior to sample - Spike with a good size lancet (the ones that come with the Edge are too small IMO) - Wipe away first drop of blood (and any residual alcohol) with gauze. - If particularly sweaty, wipe away second. - Sample by letting blood drop run into tester (try not to touch tester strip on skin/smear blood drop)

@Alan_Couzens I’m currently trying to get some consistency from the edge lactate meter. Tested after a run today then just to see how consistent it is tested again a few minutes later and it was over 2mmols difference. Can lactate drop that quickly? Squeezing a drop lead to higher reading?

@Alan_Couzens You aren’t kidding about the ones coming with the Edge being too small. @kthomas210 and I wasted a lot of time trying to get blood samples. If we could get the other to start bleeding it would just clot up so fast and we could reliably get timely samples during a test

I have a patient right now who had a stroke. He cannot transfer wheelchair to chair indep We’ve spent entire sessions doing max reps of this. Tons of variations of feedback Yesterday, still couldn’t do it completely indep. So I threw a 10lb weighted vest on him..

When boredom sets in, smart people start doing dumb stuff. With their smarts, they can rationalize said dumb stuff pretty well, but, in the end, it's still dumb stuff.

@CoffeeBlackMD @kscot75 @Alan_Couzens When I was first introduced to the MAF heart rate. I was confused because I had the opposite experience, or at least out of the norm. I’m pushing quite strongly at the indicated heart rate. Can I take anything away from this?

Alan is quite specific about where zone 2 is based on objective physiological lactate parameters. You need to test yourself to know very specifically but Phil Maffetone came up with 180 - age years ago as top end HR for zone 2 and it’s still shockingly accurate for most starting to even moderately trained athletes. It will probably feel slow. Because it is.

It amazes me when coaches/athletes have such strong opinions on the benefits of particular training zones on performance without ever running any sort of mathematical regression analysis that assesses the actual benefits of particular training zones on performance 🤔 Do it. You might be surprised.

The warm-up is the most important part of any training session. It sets the scene for what fuel the body will burn for the rest of the workout. ⛽️ Fat-burner or sugar-burner, it's your choice. 🔥

@Ross_MacP @Pflax1 Lessons from the track: they simply give the command “stay.” While it might make someone feel like your pet. It does seem more effective to prevent people from swerving in the direction you call out.

@Pflax1 I find yelling/calling confuses people & hard to understand with riders being out of breath & the wind from them travelling at speed. Better to ring a bell...but then not everybody hears that or understands what it means & some think rider's being aggressive ("get outta my way")

I had a semi-confrontational conversation with four cycling enthusiasts this morning on the bike path that I wanted to quickly unpack after thinking about it all day.

(Now that I'm no longer making a living from testing 😊) I can confidently say... Lactate testing is not that hard. Yes, there's a learning curve to getting accurate sampling down, but it's a pretty short one. Commit to getting yourself a tester & practicing during your training. The benefits are significant!

@MollyHuddle I splurged on a Woodway a couple of years ago. Hands down the best running surface. As for accuracy, worst I’ve ever run on. Fully calibrated on a level surface and my pace is at least 1.5 minutes off per mile.

Hi RunTwitter! Thinking of buying a refurbished Woodway treadmill to get through winter (usually I stay in AZ longer)- is this a good idea? Options are 7-10 years old from a gym that was upgrading. Should I just splurge on a new one? Try a different brand? Needs to go 12.5 mph

After much deliberation RE cycling medicine, I've created a LinkedIn group. linkedin.com/groups/1276707… It would be great to see you all join. There are pros and cons of many platforms, but crucially it's important to think how this space might grow professionally. cntd... (1/3)

@longtimelurkrr @scottcarlinpt Something along these lines reflects my opinion. The foot contact may change as a result of other factors/coaching cues, but is difficult to modify with a positive outcome if focused on in isolation

@scottcarlinpt I was a heel striker and tried to change, got injured. It took years to realize my pelvic tilt made it impossible to not heel strike. Once I pulled my hips back behind the rib cage all of a sudden I could strike on the ball of my feet. Reduced all my running pain

Runners— There is currently no evidence to support transitioning from heel striking to non-heel striking to reduce injury risk or improve running economy. Changing heel striking to non-heel striking may actually reduce running economy.

@scottcarlinpt @shitehawke2 Her heel strike happens close to beneath her flexed knee. The landing position is relative to her center of mass so she runs without overstriding much and lands very LIGHT compared to a heavy jogger. A PT should not promote this. As a coach, we teach proper form to prevent injury

We do this by including a nice maintenance dose of speed, strength, power work through the year (that maintains our ability to generate some good lactate at high efforts) & by not prematurely overdosing on Zone 3 work. For the developing athlete, the "sweetspot" isn't so sweet!
